Matthews receives Thurmond excellence award

Sheriff Jim Matthew became the first Kershaw County law enforcement officer to receive the Strom Thurmond Excellence in Law Enforcement Award. Matthews received the 2013 Thurmond award during a luncheon Tuesday at Fort Jackson. There are four Thurmond excellence awards, one each for municipal, county, state and federal law officers. Matthews received the county-level award.

For the past several weeks, the Chronicle-Independent has been unable to publish Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) incident reports due to the implementation of a new incident report database called InterAct Online. The C-I has not yet been provided access to the new database as it had with the KCSO's previous system.

KCSO arrests two women for burglary

Another burglary in east Camden, another set of suspects. For the second time in as many days, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested two suspects Wednesday after they were caught burglarizing an east Camden home. According to a KCSO press release, a homeowner walked into her home and saw three people as they fled carrying a television and other items.

CMS is ‘safe and positive place for our students’

Two members of the school improvement council (SIC) at Camden Middle School (CMS) say they are satisfied with the way school administrators handled an incident Tuesday morning involving a 13-year-old student bringing a gun and box cutter on campus. Camden's police chief also praised administrators, saying their choices made it possible for the Camden Police Department (CPD) to complete its investigation.

Reynolds named LCFS Employee of the Quarter

Rollie Reynolds, son of Gay and Rollie Reynolds, of Kershaw County, recently received the Employee of the Quarter award from the Lexington County Fire Service (LCFS) where he serves as an apparatus operator.

The Camden Police Department (CPD) detained a 13-year-old Camden Middle School (CMS) student after he brought a .38 Smith & Wesson gun and a box cutter to campus Tuesday.

With help from its bloodhound tracking team, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested two east Camden teenagers on burglary charges Monday. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said both boys are 16 years old.

Woman burned in Lugoff house fire

A Lugoff woman is back in the area with relatives following treatment at the Augusta Burn Center for injuries suffered in a Nov. 23 house fire. The woman suffered burns to both hands. Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) firefighters treated the woman at the scene before EMS transported her to Palmetto Richland in Columbia and then on to Augusta.
