The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is warning the public about a synthetic drug known as "K2" or "Spice." Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said Friday that Nicholas Rivers -- the 20-year-old Camden man who took his own life after murdering a Columbia cabbie and leading law enforcement on a three-county chase -- had mental health and substance abuse issues.

Acting on a tip, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) narcotics agents arrested James Albert Dorris, 35, of Camellia Lane, Lugoff, for manufacturing methamphetamine in the bathroom of his home. The agents also received word that Dorris had booby-trapped the back door with a shotgun.

Former KCSO narcotics head sues Matthews

David Dowey, the former head of the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) narcotics division, is suing Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews for $2 million claiming Matthews has made defamatory statements about him. That brings the total number of defamation suits against Matthews to four seeking a total of $8 million in actual and punitive damages.

Woman riding moped killed when pickup truck hits head-on

A Kershaw County woman died after the moped on which she was a passenger was struck head-on by a pickup truck on Smyrna Road outside Elgin around 10:15 p.m. Friday.

A Lugoff man was arrested Monday in connection to a home invasion robbery earlier this month and a September burglary. Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested Tanner Reece Brittain, 21, is facing charges following the home invasion Oct. 7 in which he allegedly kicked in the door of a residence and robbed the home owner at gunpoint. Brittain is also being charged with a burglary that occurred Sept. 19 in which he allegedly stole several firearms. After Brittain's arrest Monday he reportedly escaped through the window of a moving patrol car, was apprehended and has been charged ...

Lugoff Fire-Rescue and Kershaw County Fire Service join forces with Special Operations Team

Kershaw County residents are now provided better emergency response with the recent formation of the Special Operations Team, a cooperative effort between the Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Department and the Kershaw County Fire Service. The team specializes in accidents involving hazardous materials, unusual rescues and other unique situations. LF-R Battalion Chief Chris Spitzer said the 20 team members were handpicked from the best firefighters around the county and had to receive extra training for the situations they may encounter.

Fatal collision ties up traffic on I-20 Friday

Westbound I-20 traffic was stop and go for several hours Friday after a one-car crash near mile marker 96 took the life of Lisa Marie Munn, 25, of Camden. The S.C. Highway Patrol reported Munn drove a 2007 Honda Acura onto the median between the westbound and eastbound lanes and struck a "low boy" trailer the patrol said was legally parked. The patrol reported Munn was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated and was dead at the scene.
