Acting on a tip, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) narcotics agents arrested James Albert Dorris, 35, of Camellia Lane, Lugoff, for manufacturing methamphetamine in the bathroom of his home. The agents also received word that Dorris had booby-trapped the back door with a shotgun.

Former KCSO narcotics head sues Matthews

David Dowey, the former head of the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) narcotics division, is suing Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews for $2 million claiming Matthews has made defamatory statements about him. That brings the total number of defamation suits against Matthews to four seeking a total of $8 million in actual and punitive damages.

KCSO, SLED solve 2008 murder case

Thanks to the combined efforts of a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigator and S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agent, five men are facing murder charges in a 3-year-old home invasion and murder case. All five of the men are already in prison, two of them for another home invasion and murder this May.

Firefighters' welcome

As Kershaw County School District schools opened their doors to students Aug. 17, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) opened the doors to its fire trucks at two elementary schools early in the morning. An engine and ladder truck were sent from LFD headquarters to Wateree and Lugoff elementary schools as parents and buses brought students back to school on the nervous "first day." Lugoff man dies in Calhoun County

A 48-year-old Lugoff man was killed in an accident in Calhoun County early Saturday morning. According to S.C. Department of Public Safety reports, the accident happened on S.C. 267 and the man was not wearing a seat belt. No more information was available at press time Sunday.

Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. arrested in Clarendon County

Kershaw County Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. turned himself in to the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) Wednesday afternoon after learning an arrest warrant had been issued. CCSO deputies then booked Tucker at the Clarendon County Detention Center. A CCSO report listed the charge as "unlawful use or disposal of personal property subject to security interest." A judge later released Tucker on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, according to information taken from VINELink, a website used to track detainees across the country.

KCSO supports cancer research, constable

In May 2008, Nancy Watts, a constable who works for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), learned she had breast cancer. For many people, a cancer diagnosis is devastating news. It certainly came as a shock to Watts, who is one of the individuals who is tasked with serving civil papers for the KCSO's civil division. Watts' doctor recommended she undergo a mastectomy. Normally, a mastectomy requires the patient be out of work for eight weeks. In Watts' case, she came back after four weeks.

Matthews to equip KCSO deputies with body cameras

Shortly after taking office in 2011, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews began looking into equipping his officers with body cameras. As time passed his interest took on a more serious nature and in April 2014, he directed one of his staff to begin the process of evaluating different systems.
