KCSO, SLED solve 2008 murder case

Thanks to the combined efforts of a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigator and S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agent, five men are facing murder charges in a 3-year-old home invasion and murder case. All five of the men are already in prison, two of them for another home invasion and murder this May.

Firefighters' welcome

As Kershaw County School District schools opened their doors to students Aug. 17, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) opened the doors to its fire trucks at two elementary schools early in the morning. An engine and ladder truck were sent from LFD headquarters to Wateree and Lugoff elementary schools as parents and buses brought students back to school on the nervous "first day." Lugoff man dies in Calhoun County

A 48-year-old Lugoff man was killed in an accident in Calhoun County early Saturday morning. According to S.C. Department of Public Safety reports, the accident happened on S.C. 267 and the man was not wearing a seat belt. No more information was available at press time Sunday.

Bethune man killed when ATV strikes deer

An ATV driver, Jessie Darnell Reeves, 26, of Bethune, was killed in a crash early Sunday morning after swerving and crashing his ATV into a deer, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. Troopers said the 2003 Suzuki ATV was traveling east toward SC 346.

Cassatt man held on child molestation charges

Kershaw County Sheriff's investigators have arrested Russell Wayne Redick, 53, of Cassatt, on multiple charges after it was determined that he repeatedly molested two young girls under the age of 11. Redick is charged with two counts each of lewd act on a minor, criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11 years old and sexual exploitation of a minor (third degree).

Godbold-Nash Memorial Ride Saturday

The annual Godbold-Nash Memorial Ride will kick off Saturday at Camden Middle School (CMS). The ride honors S.C. Highway Patrol troopers H.M. Godbold and Jonathan Nash. Godbold died 19 years ago on U.S. 1 in Lugoff after his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver while responding to a call. Nash died in 2009 after his motorcycle was struck by a car on U.S. 1 near CMS while leading the ride that year.

The Citizens Academy, led by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott (right), is designed to educate and keep communities informed. ‘Fire Stop’ extinguisher puts out kitchen fire

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) crews arrived at the scene of a reported kitchen fire at Sherwood Apartments around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to find only a light haze of smoke, but no fire. According to a LF-R press release, an automatic fire extinguisher magnetically attached to the stove hood had activated and extinguished the grease fire before it spread into the rest of the kitchen and apartment.

Teen leads deputies on chase in stolen car

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies apprehended a 14-year-old Richland County boy early Monday after he reportedly stole a car and led authorities on a chase. According to a KCSO press release, a motorist called 911 around 7:15 a.m. Monday to report the driver of a yellow Ford Mustang was headed east and swerving in and out of traffic on U.S. 1 between Elgin and Lugoff.

Multiple fire departments protect RV park from fire

Dozens of firefighters responded to a yard fire on the 1300 block of Fort Jackson Road around 2 p.m. Monday in an effort to keep the fire from spreading into an RV park near I-20. Crews from Doby's Mill and Blaney fire departments, as well as other firefighters from the Kershaw County Fire Service and Columbia-Richland fire departments, joined Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) units in battling the blaze.
