District website logs nearly 600,000 hits in 2014-15

During the 2014-15 school year, the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) website received a total of 599,214 hits, the most in one school year. The district website received 306,986 hits in 2012-13 and 434,618 in 2013-14.

Boykin selected as Gates Millennium Scholar

Earlier this year, Camden High School (CHS) graduate Zachary Boykin became one of only 1,000 Class of 2015 graduates across the country to receive a Gates Millennium Scholarship. More than 57,000 students applied for the scholarship, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The scholarship provides funds to attend any U.S. college or university.

A Camden woman managed to attend both of her sons' college graduations in different states on the same day recently. Cynthia Cooper, mother of Matthew Goodwin and Brad Cooper, faced the trial of trying to be in two states -- and not in South Carolina -- on June 5.

AKA Sorority Inc. presents scholarship awards to L-E grads

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Inc. presented scholarships to several students as the 2014-15 school year wound down. LaKayla Renae Dixon and Aayahna Monae Herbert, both Lugoff-Elgin High School seniors, each received the 2015 scholarship awards from AKA's Iota Omega Omega Chapter.

Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands President Carter Clark accepts a check for $5,000 from Claire Shell of Second Look Charities on Monday afternoon outside the Jackson Teen Center (JTC). The donation -- complimenting a recent $8,000 grant to The ALPHA Center -- will help purchase recording equipment so students will have a state-of-the-art modern facility to record, produce, develop and market a music CD featuring local talent. KCSD referenda public meeting schedule nearly finalized

A schedule of public meetings regarding school construction referenda is almost finalized. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees continued working on the schedule during its July 14 meeting. At least one referendum, possibly two, are planned for the November 2016 general election.
