Fitness Zone donates to KCSD

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees recently accepted a $1,600 donation from George Gibson, owner and manager of the Fitness Zone in Lugoff. The money comes from proceeds earned during the sixth annual Jingle Bell Run sponsored by Fitness Zone in December.

Decoda with Claire Bryant to perform at FAC Thursday

The members of Decoda chamber ensemble, lead by Claire Bryant, entered the gym at North Central Middle School one by one, each playing their respective instrument. The students of the eighth grade sat, rapt with attention, as the instruments' melodies blended in unison before them.

KCSD ahead financially for school year so far

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is already ahead financially for the current school year by more than $500,000, according to KCSD Chief Financial Officer Donnie Wilson. Wilson presented November and December's district finances to the Kershaw County Board of Trustees during its meeting Tuesday morning.

Fourteen Kershaw County educators -- two first time applicants and 12 renewals -- have earned the highest credential available in the teaching profession, bringing the total number of Kershaw County School District (KCSD) employees who are National Board certified to 130.

Anne Frank exhibit’s opening night draws large attendance

A large turnout of students, parents, faculty staff and community members marked a successful opening Thursday night at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) of an international traveling exhibit focused on Anne Frank, whose diary chronicled her family's attempts to hide from Nazis during World War II.

Persons interested in employment with the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) are invited to participate in the district's 13th annual Teacher Career Fair to be held Feb. 1 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Camden High School, 1022 Ehrenclou Drive, in Camden.

CHS finalist for Palmetto’s Finest Schools Award

Camden High School (CHS) is a finalist for the 2014 Palmetto's Finest Schools Awards. After extensive evaluations by fellow educators and previous Palmetto's Finest winners, CHS is among nine schools competing for the honor. The application process includes elements on student achievement, instructional programs, professional learning communities and school culture.

Two-hour delay for KCSD students Tuesday

The Kershaw County School District announced Monday that, due to a forecast of extreme cold weather and out of an abundance of caution, schools will open on a two-hour delay for students Tuesday. Staff will report at their normal time. Three- and 4-year-old students in morning classes will NOT attend. Breakfast will be served.

Students to take leadership role with Anne Frank exhibit

Students at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) will take on leadership roles when an international exhibit on World War II diarist Anne Frank opens at the school Jan. 9. According to former L-EHS student Coy Gibson, who helped have his alma mater selected as an exhibition site, current students will play an important role during the exhibit's appearance.

ATEC teacher celebrates national award

Earlier this year, Katie Gilson learned she was one of 41 recipients of the National Association of Agricultural Educators' (NAAE) Teachers Turn the Key (TTTK) Award. With the award came the chance for Gilson -- selected from a nationwide pool of applicants -- to travel to Las Vegas to attend the NAAE's annual convention.

Thanks to a $10,000 donation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of South Carolina, Kershaw County Adult Education (KCAE) will be able to complete upgrades to the technology it uses to offer its services.

Fill a Truck Campaign benefits more than 80 KCSD students

Kershaw County School District (KCSD) partnered with the Camden Walmart and the United Way of Kershaw County to collect toys and coats for needy children through Walmart's Fill a Truck campaign. Volunteers from all three organizations manned the cardboard trucks in the store over three weekends in December to encourage Walmart shoppers to participate. The results were outstanding with enough items donated to benefit over 80 KCSD students as well as others who were being served through the Toys for Tots programs. Walmart employees themselves purchased three shopping carts worth of items.

On a roll! MES hosts ‘Careers on Wheels’ fair

Midway Elementary School (MES) students had the unique opportunity Wednesday to learn about various career opportunities that incorporate automobiles within their local community at a "Careers on Wheels" fair. MES Guidance Counselor Laura Privette organized the fair in an effort to teach students about local, viable career options.
