L-EHS' Schnibben is 2012 Teacher of the Year

A perspective of herself as a teenager in school and a passion for her career led to Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) English teacher Nicole Schnibben to be named the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) 2012 Teacher of the Year. Schnibben received the accolade during Monday night's KCSD Teacher of the Year banquet at Camden High School (CHS).

Upchurch & Jowers celebrates All-County Academic Team

Family as a support system appeared to be a theme at Monday evening's 17th annual Upchurch & Jowers All-County Academic Team Banquet at Bethesda Baptist Church. Upchurch & Jowers and the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) honored the 31 best and the brightest high school seniors in the county. The academic team is made up of the top 10 students from each of Kershaw County's three high schools, as well as the student with the highest ACT/SAT score at each school.

An 'Excellent' first year

The North Central High School (NCHS) Concert Band performed in the Carowinds Festival of Music April 13. With nine students, the band played Grade IV music and received an Excellent rating from the judges. NCHS Director of Bands Caitlin McMurtrie said the performance was a huge accomplishment for the students, since most other groups in the festival had at least 20 to 40 members and this was the NCHS Concert Band's first year in existence. An eye for design

Two Kershaw County School District (KCSD) students -- Lugoff-Elgin High student Domminique Thomas-Hayes (third from left) and Leslie M. Stover Middle student Drew Blocker (second from right) -- were selected as the winners of the design for the 2012 Kershaw County Special Olympics T-shirt. More than 225 local athletes from 23 classes in schools across KCSD participated in the Special Olympics games April 13. Joining the students were (from left) Col. Morgan discusses KCSD 'areas of concern'

Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan found three "areas of concern" that would affect plans for the 2012-2013 school year. Morgan discussed those concerns with the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees at its meeting Tuesday.

Team effort

The Junior Beta Club and Student Council joined together to lead Pine Tree Hill School's effort in raising money for the American Red Cross. Throughout the month of March, students filled containers in their classrooms with coins, dollars and checks. The total amount collected was more than $500. Focus on healthy living

Camden Elementary School was awarded a $1,500 "Healthy Living" grant from Kroger. The annual contest encourages schools to creatively demonstrate how they promoted healthy living for students throughout their communities.
