School district mourns loss of former special needs director

The county is mourning the loss of beloved Kershaw County School District (KCSD) special education educator and district director Deborah "Debi" Hardin Davis who passed away Tuesday after a year and half battle with cancer.

Montessori conversion to charter school delayed

Plans to convert the Montessori School of Camden (MSC) on Battleship Road are being delayed a year, according to Headmaster Dr. John Moncure. In November, Moncure confirmed plans for a bid to pursue charter school status with the intent of becoming one in August. Plans to do so have now been pushed back to August 2016.

Jingle Bell Run proceeds benefit local schools

Once again, the proceeds of the local Jingle Bell Run are being used to benefit local schools. Now in its seventh year, the 5K run/walk sponsored by the Fitness Zone took place Dec. 5. This year, five Kershaw County School District (KCSD) schools are receiving $1,500 to be used for health and physical education projects.

L-EHS Drama Dept. showcases student work

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) drama students recently portrayed the perils, joys and everyday challenges of high school life in their winter production. The play consisted of a series of monologues, written by L-EHS Drama III students, dealing with issues such as pregnancy, parent's divorce, social media mishaps, relationship issues and navigating friendships. The play followed a group of students through their senior year in high school.

Gary is KCSD Food Service Employee of the Month

Twenty-four years ago, Brenda Gary began working at Camden High School as a food service employee within the Kershaw County School District (KCSD). Gary worked at Camden High until last year when officials determined help was needed at Leslie M. Stover Middle School's cafeteria in Elgin.

KCSD receives two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is the only South Carolina school district to receive not just one, but two 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants for 2015. Partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands, Jackson School and Pine Tree Hill Elementary School will house afterschool academic assistance programs.

CHS raises funds for PAALS

Camden High School's (CHS) National Honor Society (NHS) presented Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS) with a $3,000 check Tuesday. The money is going to a program called Rob's Best Friend Fund; a ceremony marking the donation took place in the CHS media center.

Jackson’s Goodwin is KCRC Reading Administrator of the Year

The Kershaw County Reading Council's (KCRC) Administrator of the Year is doing everything she can to make sure students are reading at least at grade level. The KCRC named Jackson Elementary School Principal Matia Goodwin as its Reading Administrator of the Year at its annual recognition program Dec. 8.

Arbor Day at Doby's Mill

On December 5, students at Doby's Mill Elementary school participated in Kershaw County's Soil and Water Conservation District's celebration of Arbor Day. Donna Douglas explained when Arbor Day is recognized. "Arbor Day is the first Friday in December, that is when we celebrate it in South Carolina because that is the best time to plant. It's celebrated at different times in different states," Douglas explained. Students participated in an assembly honoring Arbor Day and performed skits and songs in honor of Arbor Day. School district gives flu warning

According to Kershaw County School District Director of Communications Mary Anne Byrd, the district received an update last week from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) saying it is seeing an early and large rise in seasonal flu cases. Byrd said the district is currently experiencing the same situation in many of the schools.

Dec. 19 to be half day for KCSD students

The Kershaw County School District will have a half day for students on Dec. 19, the last day of student attendance before the holiday break. Staff will work a regular schedule. Students in 3-and 4-year-old developmentally delayed and 4-year-old kindergarten classes will not attend.

School board considers legislative positions as two trustees exit

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees said "good-bye" to two of its members during a reception preceding its meeting Tuesday evening. The board honored departing trustees Nissary Wood and Dr. Don Copley. Wood and Copley received individual awards during the reception with working with the school board. Voters elected Wood and Copley to the board in 2010.
