KCSD closer to 100 percent graduation rate

Graduation rates in Kershaw County rose 1.6 percent last year pushing the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) closer to its goal of a 100 percent graduation rate. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees learned the news at its meeting Tuesday night.

Camden Middle School (CMS) sports some new trees, thanks to participating in the second Green Apple Day of Service on Saturday morning. Planting began at 9:30 a.m. on the front lawn of the school along the driveway entrance.

Students in Mrs. Linda Poeta's kindergarten class and Mrs. Carol Bowling's fourth grade class meet weekly to read stories together. This special time fosters a love and excitement for reading for these Kindergarten children and for their 4th grade buddies.

Community members are invited to learn more about the Kershaw County School District's facility needs at a series of public meetings being held later this month and in October. Superintendent Frank Morgan and Operations Executive Director Billy Smith will hold a series of meetings across the county to explain the district's building needs, answer questions and receive suggestions.

KCSD holds first Phase II public meeting

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) held its first in a series of public meetings on Phase II of its Facilities Equalization Plan at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) Tuesday evening. KCSD Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan said he thinks the district has proved it knows how to manage money and time with all of the extra projects it completed that were not originally a part of Phase I.

High school rivalry raises nearly $39,000 for United Way

In one week, Camden and Lugoff-Elgin high schools raised $38,779.25 for the United Way of Kershaw County. Camden High School (CHS) took the lead in this year's United Way challenge versus Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS).

Lugoff-Elgin High School hosts legislative forum

Local and state representatives told students at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) that education is the key to the future during a Sept. 17 legislative forum at the school. The L-EHS Student and School Improvement councils, with the help of L-EHS school improvement council member Robert Price, hosted the forum to encourage juniors and seniors to engage in the political process and register to vote.

New state vaccine requirement for students

South Carolina state law mandates that all 7th graders show proof of having had a Tdap booster after their 7th birthday at the start of this school year. Kershaw County School District (KCSD) officials have given students who have not provided new certifications of immunization showing they have met this requirement until September 30 to comply.
