Montessori teachers certified

Three faculty members with the Montessori School of Camden (MSC) have been certified at the Early Childhood level (ages 3-6). Meek Duren, Oscar Avila and Kenia Dayeh de Bermudez were recognized Feb. 24 at the annual conference of Montessori Educational Programs International (MEPI), held at Litchfield Beach. MEPI is one of about eight professional societies in the United States that oversee Montessori teacher preparation. All three teachers studied under Mariyam Petiwala through the Institute for Guided Studies (IGS), located in Camden. IGS is one of only four programs in South Carolina accredited to train educators to work in Montessori classrooms ...

Lessons for life

On Tuesdays at Midway Elementary School, second-grade classes are often found being led by a special instructor. Kershaw County Deputy Mechelle Cobb enriches the students' usual social studies lessons with instruction on the importance of law enforcement in the community and strategies for dealing with conflict and bullying. Cobb also serves as a mentor for students. She works with students YaKeem Knox, MaKhi Holmes, Summer Martin and Matty Stephens. Cobb and students Summer Martin, Yakeem Knox and Chris Crane visit with K-9 deputy Hailey and Lt. Ty Cobb.

"Insufficient evidence." That's the word from a federal civil rights office regarding Title IX federal funding allegations against Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, forbids sex discrimination in any activity receiving financial federal assistance.
