Kershaw County citizens age 65 years or older can receive lifetime Golden Circle passes that allow them to attend school-sponsored activities or athletic events free of charge. The passes are good from year to year. Admission to athletic playoffs is not included.

Educators earn credit by learning about agriculture

Kershaw County educators Mary Hayes, Kiersten Ross, Elma Shannon and Marilyn Shuler were among the 50 educators from across the state who recently completed a rigorous week learning about the importance of family farmers and domestically produced food, fiber and fuel at the S.C. Farm Bureau (SCFB) 2011 Summer Ag in the Classroom Teacher Institute in Aiken.

KCSD suspends SLED check fees

The Kershaw County School District is temporarily suspending a new $25 S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) background check for volunteers. KCSD Communications Director Mary Anne Byrd said the move is in response to concerns from community members.

Three months ago, Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) parents Mike and Marti Gogan sent an email to Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan, expressing concern that the school district was in violation of Title IX federal funding regulations.

KCSD seniors score all-time ACT high

Kershaw County 2011 seniors' average composite score on the ACT college entrance exam reached an all-time district high and outperformed the state's school seniors at the same time a record number of local students took the test.

SSHS grant working, says director

During the 2010-11 fiscal year, 688 Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SSHS) grant services were provided to 597 Kershaw County School District (KCSD) students. Those 597 students had more unexcused absences, disciplinary referrals for simple and aggravated assault, as well as more out-of-school suspensions than the overall student body who did not receive any services, according to SSHS Project Director Kevin Rhodes.

Cheer-rific time

Cheerleaders-in-the-making are invited to the annual Lil' Demon Cheer Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). In addition to being the L-EHS cheerleaders' largest fundraiser of the year, the clinic is also an opportunity for the cheerleaders to mentor and serve as role models for younger girls in the West Wateree Community. Both the Varsity and JV cheerleading squads participate, and youngsters from ages 3 thru 12 are invited to attend. The cost of the clinic is $30 and includes snacks and drinks, a T-shirt and the opportunity to cheer during the first quarter ...
