As the result of a change in state law, South Carolina students -- including those from Kershaw County -- in the class of 2015 will no longer have to pass the state's exit exam as a requirement for graduation from high school. Starting this month, the deletion of the exit exam requirement also applies to any student in the graduating class of 1990 and later.

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees on Tuesday selected former Kershaw County School District (KCSD) principal Theodore Jackson to serve as interim principal for Bethune Elementary School and Mt. Pisgah Elementary School. Jackson is following Davy Branham who moved to North Central High School as principal.

On a 6-1 vote with two members absent, the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees approved a resolution Tuesday amending a proposed bond referendum that would ultimately ask voters to support a penny sales tax in order to pay for new school construction and improvements. The board also voted, 6-1, to approve the language of a second referendum listing out those projects. Trustee Kim Durant voted against both measures; trustees Don Copley and Derrick Proctor were absent.

Kershaw County School District leaders spoke at last Thursday's meeting of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce to explain the need for the Facilities Equalization Plan Phase 2 Referendum that will be voted on in the November general election and, if passed, would provide up to $133 million to build new schools and renovate and repair others. The Water Environment Association of South Carolina (WEASC) has awarded a $1,500 Legacy of Learning Scholarship to University of South Carolina (USC) student Tyler Kirkland of Camden. The Legacy of Learning Scholarship was established to encourage students pursuing a career in the environmental field. Kirkland,is a rising senior majoring in chemical engineering at USC with a 3.3 grad point average.
