Kershaw County 2011 seniors' average composite score on the ACT college entrance exam reached an all-time district high and outperformed the state's school seniors at the same time a record number of local students took the test.

During the 2010-11 fiscal year, 688 Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SSHS) grant services were provided to 597 Kershaw County School District (KCSD) students. Those 597 students had more unexcused absences, disciplinary referrals for simple and aggravated assault, as well as more out-of-school suspensions than the overall student body who did not receive any services, according to SSHS Project Director Kevin Rhodes.
Cheerleaders-in-the-making are invited to the annual Lil' Demon Cheer Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). In addition to being the L-EHS cheerleaders' largest fundraiser of the year, the clinic is also an opportunity for the cheerleaders to mentor and serve as role models for younger girls in the West Wateree Community. Kershaw County elementary and middle schools outperformed the state on Adequate Yearly Performance (AYP) results released recently, although local education leaders say the federal system has been criticized for its "all or nothing" ratings and seems to contradict local positive results released on PASS, the state's accountability test for grades 3-8.
The Montessori School of Camden has upgraded Beard Hall in preparation for the 2011-2012 school year. Denton Builders gutted the toddler room, replacing the flooring, adding all new cabinetry and sinks and painting the room. In addition, a covered space at the exit of the infant room was added and lighting in the room was upgraded. Surveying the upgrades are classroom staff Cintyia Moreno, Heather Conder and Meredith Hines.

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) drama students recently portrayed the perils, joys and everyday challenges of high school life in their winter production. The play consisted of a series of monologues, written by L-EHS Drama III students, dealing with issues such as pregnancy, parent's divorce, social media mishaps, relationship issues and navigating friendships. The play followed a group of students through their senior year in high school.
Twenty-four years ago, Brenda Gary began working at Camden High School as a food service employee within the Kershaw County School District (KCSD). Gary worked at Camden High until last year when officials determined help was needed at Leslie M. Stover Middle School's cafeteria in Elgin.

The Kershaw County Reading Council's (KCRC) Administrator of the Year is doing everything she can to make sure students are reading at least at grade level. The KCRC named Jackson Elementary School Principal Matia Goodwin as its Reading Administrator of the Year at its annual recognition program Dec. 8.
