Teacher earns science award

Camden Middle School teacher Valerie Willis thought it was a big honor to be nominated for the 2011 Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award and was thrilled to earn the top award for South Carolina. So when she learned that she also received the honor for the whole Southeast region, she was even more flattered.

Under the direction of Col. Ret. Webb, the Camden High School JROTC Bulldog Battalion comes to Jackson School on every Monday and Wednesday to mentor 2nd grade students. Our second grade students have the opportunity to see the cadets in uniform as leaders. The cadets also read with students and assist them with Accelerated Reader Tests. This is a great collaboration between Jackson and Camden High School. In honor of International Walk to School Day, Lugoff Elementary School (LES) students walked around their school Wednesday morning. LES Principal Melissa Lloyd said that because few students walk to school, staff thought it would be a great idea to "have the entire student body get a bit of morning exercise while walking around the entire school." PTO Board member Molly LeGrand cheered students on and high-fived her daughter, Taylor, as she walked around the school.

Kardack earns ‘Silver Medallion’ from USC-Sumter

Candace "Brooke" Kardack, daughter of Candy Kardack and Bobby Kardack, has received a "Silver Medallion" award from the University of South Carolina, Sumter for the 2010-11 academic school year on Sept. 23. In order to qualify for this award, a student must have completed at least 30 hours on campus and achieved a 3.5 – 3.94 GPA. Brooke completed the year with a GPA of 3.93. She was also named on the Dean's List for the fall and spring semesters.

Read Across America Day in Kershaw County

‘Critical, hazardous’ fixes at Zemp to only cost $5,000

It will only cost the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) about $5,000 to repair the most critical and hazardous issues at Camden High School's Zemp Stadium. The district plans to begin making those repairs -- and similar ones at Lugoff-Elgin and North Central high schools' stadiums -- during warming weather later this year.

Bulldogs Giving Back

Saturday night, a number of basketball players spent a few hours on the Camden High School's (CHS) basketball court playing five-on-five games to raise money for the Kershaw County Community Medical Clinic (CMC). The highlight of the evening: a game between members of the CHS' 2009 state championship basketball team and a team made up of other CHS basketball alumni. The alumni came out on top, narrowly defeating the 2009 team 38 to 36 after two 20-minute periods.
