Teachers learn from lumber plant tour near Camden

Twenty-five teachers from around the state of South Carolina toured Canfor Southern Pine, formerly New South Lumber Company. The June 26 tour took place thanks to the S.C. Forestry Commission and S.C. Forestry Association.

Family support and wise words helped 2012 Lugoff-Elgin High School graduate Hunter Smith achieve perfect attendance throughout his entire public school career. Hunter is being recognized as the only student in Kershaw County to have achieved 12 years of perfect attendance.

Camden native Donna Stoney got a rare treat as she walked across the stage in May to receive her diploma from Coker College in Hartsville. Her sister, Gertrude Stoney, an adjunct professor at Coker, was sitting among the sea of professors cheering their students on.

Making a difference

In 2005, Clifton Harryton Anderson, a retired mental-health professional, said that he would be a "solid figure and promise keeper" to a small class of Bethune Elementary fifth-graders. To their surprise, Anderson would be consistently "caring" and "supportive" of their endeavors over the next seven years.
