Beyond $102 million

The current economic downturn brought low construction costs, allowing the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) to move forward with an ambitious $102 million Installment Purchase Plan (IPP)-funded facilities equalization plan. But it also brought a wave of criticism from county residents who grew increasingly frustrated with seeing new school construction at the same time the district laid off teachers, slashed National Board Certification (NBC) stipends and enacted districtwide furloughs.

The real surprise when he pulled up to one of the county's high school's was not what he found, but what he didn't find.

TV time

Lugoff-Elgin High School's TV production class set the stage for its Thanksgiving show with a feast prepared by the students. Students enjoyed turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie and set the table with place cards. The traditional scene of friends gathered around a bountiful table created the backdrop for L-ETV's Thanksgiving week newscasts. Students involved in the filming are Thomas Barrett, Rachel Zigila, Tessa Blevins, Zach Hellman, Chris Gibson, Ryan Hinson, Case Horton, Brandon Rose, Dustin Hill, Jarkese Rodriguez and Steven Fogle. Derek Berry teaches the class.

Peanut butter explosion

Students of the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) collected a record 1,004 jars of peanut butter during Red Ribbon Week in October as a part of ATEC's annual project to benefit the food bank of Christian Community Ministries. Students were asked to bring in jars of peanut butter. The goal was 1,000 jars. Last year students contributed 907 jars. Students in the protective services, cosmetology and practical nursing programs collected the most jars and earned a movie and popcorn day in the auditorium. KCSD board determines stance on state education issues

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees unanimously approved a list of five legislative positions to address with the 2012 general assembly – all of which include the board's views on public education issues ranging from funding reform for K-12 education to vouchers and tax credits.
