Phase 2 meetings continue at NCHS

There is only one more Facilities Equalization Phase 2 meeting before Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan presents feedback to the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees. The most recent of the Phase 2 public meetings took place Tuesday night at North Central High School (NCHS).

A reading camel

Camden Elementary School (CES) of the Arts third-graders Emily Cantey and Greer Younghans enjoy a ride on a camel during CES' Family Reading Night Oct. 10. Sam's Path Mobile Petting Zoo and Live Nativities brought the camel to help celebrate CES' reading theme of ancient Egypt. Students were allowed to ride the camel for a few minutes as other families played on the playground, enjoyed a spaghetti dinner or bought books from CES' book fair. The school also hosted an archeological dig.

Johnny Appleseed Day fun

Camden First Baptist Kindergarten & Child Care Center had a fun day celebrating "Johnny Appleseed Day" on Thursday, September 26. Mr. Olin Jackson from Lugoff visited and took the 2K, 3K and 4K students on a wagon ride around the campus.

First annual KCSD Cat Fight Blood Drive

The Leslie M. Stover Middle School Tiger mascot and the Lugoff-Elgin Middle Leopard mascot are helping their schools battle it out in the KCSD Cat Fight Blood Drive. Interested persons can donate blood at their favorite school.

LEHS stadium press box dedication today

The Lugoff-Elgin High School (LEHS) stadium press box will be dedicated to the memory of Joey Dorton during Friday's night football game. Dorton-a LEHS alumni, ABLE Club member and former school board chairman-died last year.

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) received a recommendation for accreditation following a three-day long external review by AdvancEd earlier this week.

KCSD considers new athlete concussion policy

Fifteen Kershaw County School District (KCSD) athletes have had confirmed concussion so far this school year -- 13 at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) and two at North Central High School (NCHS). No Camden High School students have endured head injuries. At NCHS, one student was a volleyball player and the other was a football player. Ten of the L-EHS athletes were football players; the other three included a volleyball player, cheerleader and a student in a physical education class. All team sports injuries happened at an official game, according to the district.

Graduation rates in Kershaw County rose 1.6 percent last year pushing the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) closer to its goal of a 100 percent graduation rate. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees learned the news at its meeting Tuesday night.

Camden Middle School (CMS) sports some new trees, thanks to participating in the second Green Apple Day of Service on Saturday morning. Planting began at 9:30 a.m. on the front lawn of the school along the driveway entrance.

Students in Mrs. Linda Poeta's kindergarten class and Mrs. Carol Bowling's fourth grade class meet weekly to read stories together. This special time fosters a love and excitement for reading for these Kindergarten children and for their 4th grade buddies.

Community members are invited to learn more about the Kershaw County School District's facility needs at a series of public meetings being held later this month and in October. Superintendent Frank Morgan and Operations Executive Director Billy Smith will hold a series of meetings across the county to explain the district's building needs, answer questions and receive suggestions.
