Sharing a story

Faith Amick's fifth-grade class at Midway Elementary School finished their study of folktales and fairytales by sharing stories with children from the kindergarten classes. The fifth-graders each prepared a favorite story to read aloud at a special storytime in the school media center that delighted the kindergarteners. A chapter in history

Wateree Elementary School's fifth-graders reenacted scenes from the book "Ruby Bridges" as part of their Black History Month celebration. Students/"federal marshals" Seth Branham, Bridges Young, William Christianson and Zac Branham offer police protection to Ruby, portrayed by Tayjah Steele, as she enters the all-white school for the very first time.

Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) students exceeded national career and technical education performance standards for 2010, according to results released by the S.C. Department of Education.

TSA eyes campus in Camden

The city of Camden should become the new owners of 8.9 acres of the former Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy property no later than the end of May. Camden City Council -- with Mayor Jeffrey Graham recusing himself and Councilman Pat Partin absent -- voted 3-0 Tuesday morning on second and final reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase.

At the invitation of Walt Disney World of Orlando, Fla., the North Central High School March Knights performed at the EPCOT Center Disney Theme Park Feb. 20. In addition, band drum major Dylan Sims made first chair at the Limestone Band Clinic and won the Limestone Scholarship Contest. Members of the Marching Knights expressed thanks to their supporters this season. Those who would like to financially support the Marching Knights are asked to contact the president of the band booster club or the director of the band.

Local schools 'make the grade'

For the first time since implementation of the state report cards in 2001, 100 percent of the Absolute ratings issued for the Kershaw County School District and all of its schools are Excellent, Good or Average. Statewide, 85 percent of high schools achieved this level for Absolute ratings and 82 percent for elementary and middle schools.

Stadium lights approved

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to replace the stadium light poles at Lugoff-Elgin High School for $204,750.
