Elk Lodge Scholarship awarded

Antuan Augustus (second from left) and Kirsten Baker (second from right), both seniors at Lugoff-Elgin High School, were the winners of the Camden Lugoff Elks 2012 Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship. Rich Wagner (right) and Vickie Schermbeck (left) from the local Elks Lodge presented the cash awards to the winners on May 17th at the school during a Senior Awards Day Ceremony. L-EMS celebrates Decades Day

Mrs. Brazell's ELA classes at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School celebrated Decades Day . Students -- such as (from left) Camille Sullivan, Sarah Hardin, Molli Smith, Tyjah Steele, Kara Hayes, Madison Guthrie and Katelyn Vandevander -- researched different aspects of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s and created Glogsters to present their research. Students dressed in fashion from their decade or as a famous person from their decade. They created a timeline in the hallway and plotted different events, and created a time capsule to represent items from 2000-2011. In class, students presented their decades' research. It was exciting day for all!

Spitzer recognized achieving the distinction of Eagle Scout

Lugoff-Elgin High School senior Matthew Spitzer achieved the distinction of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor May 20. Matthew's required service project included preparing a detailed map of the historic cemetery of Smyrna United Methodist Church in Elgin. Matthew also built a prayer garden and seating for visitors. Matthew is pictured here presenting the details of his project work to Joe McConnaughay from the church's Cemetery Committee. Matthew is a member of Boy Scout Troop 316, sponsored by St. John's United Methodist Church in Lugoff.

Brick by brick

Crews begin demolishing the band room of the old Camden Middle School (CMS) campus Wednesday on Laurens Street. Following CMS' move to McRae Road several years ago, the Kershaw County School District attempted to sell the property twice to developers who had proposed creating a new residential area by extending Jordan Street south to Jordan Street. Neighbors fought the move, leaving the property vacant for years and subject to vandalism. The district decided earlier this year to demolish the remaining buildings and have the debris removed in order to make the property more attractive to sell.

Elizabeth Combs of Camden has completed her freshman year at the University of South Carolina with a 4.0 grade point average and was named to the President's List.

SS/HS grant a 'success' for KCSD

Programs funded by a grant obtained by Kershaw County following the 2007 gang-related shooting death of a high school student now employ 41 full- and part-time residents. It has helped reduce recidivism at the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) Continuous Learning Center (CLC), provided "targeted" counseling to 2,900 students and created a positive behavioral program that will be expanded to all middle schools.
