CofC honors local students for academics

Junior Leadership KC applications available
Applications for the 2011-12 Junior Leadership Kershaw County class for rising juniors and seniors are now available at the county's high schools and the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center.
New district office valued at $3.18 million
Those paying close attention to Wednesday's real estate listings may have been surprised to see what looked like the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) spending $3,178,850 for its new district offices on U.S. 1 (DeKalb Street) in Camden instead of the $1.25 million first reported.

Thompson honored for school board service
For more than a decade, Carol Thompson fought for the well being of Kershaw County School District (KCSD) students. So she shouldn't have been surprised when she was recognized in January by the South Carolina School Board Association for 15 years of service on the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees.
National study gives high score to KCSD
A national study measuring the productivity of every school district in the country has rated the Kershaw County School District as providing a "high return on its investment." It is the only school district in the Midlands and one of only 12 in the state to earn the report's highest marks.
Camden native honored with education award
Josh Austin was one of eight senior Presbyterian College education majors to receive the Recognition of Excellence on a recent national education licensure test. The honor recognizes students whose scores rank in the top 15 percent nationally of students who have ever taken the test.

A former Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) assistant football coach has filed a civil suit against the Kershaw County School District (KCSD), accusing the school district of breach of contract and age discrimination after he was not offered a letter of agreement to work during the 2009-10 school year.

The Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) will celebrate national Career and Technical Education Month with its spring semester open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 10. Parents of students and the public are invited to attend.
Holmstrom wins MSC Geographic Bee
Josh Holmstrom, a student at the Montessori School of Camden, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee Jan. 14 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee. This year's Bee is sponsored by Google.
Palmetto Gold & Silver: 8 schools honored
Eight Kershaw County elementary and middle schools -- up from only two local K-8 schools last year -- were among more than 430 schools statewide recognized Monday by the S.C. Department of Education for academic achievement and closing achievement gaps in 2010.

CHS newspaper wins first Palmetto Award in 14 years
Camden High School's (CHS) Palmetto Leaf newspaper staff won a total of eight awards from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) in April. For the first time since 1999, the Leaf won the Palmetto Award for its class level, Class 1, according to newspaper advisor Amy Goodwin. This is Goodwin's first year back at CHS; she is a CHS graduate and previously taught at the school. ...
