CES to rock into healthy living

More than 10 local businesses will participate in Camden Elementary School of the Creative Arts' (CESCA) "Party Rocking into Healthy Living" event Tuesday. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., CESCA will present fitness tips, demonstration classes, healthy meal planning and more to the Kershaw County community.

Rap in class

In an effort to improve literacy at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, students spent the last 30 minutes of each day in enrichment. For several weeks, students read aloud "The Bully" and participated in activities related to the book. Students kept a journal and discussed the book with their teacher. A few students in Lynn Weeks class – including Kedar Jennings, Parker Gogan and Ryan Bland -- decided to "rap" the story to their classmates. It was exciting to see every student actively engaged and participating during the activities.

Students of Junior Leadership Kershaw County recently participated in a session on social and formal dining etiquette.The class met at the Mill Pond Steak House in Boykin and was served a four-course meal. Sara Fakoury, a certified trainer with the National League of Junior Cotillions, covered social skills and formal dining techniques. Kershaw County middle schools will join the nation next month by recognizing Groundhog Shadowing Day Feb. 2. Seventh- and eighth-grade students will be allowed to go to work with a parent, relative or neighbor to learn more about the workplace and potential careers.

‘Speed booking’

Sixth-grade students at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School -- including Tyesha Jett, Katelyn Vandevander, Brandon Phillips, Justin Dorton,Otensia Anderson, Turner Stockman, Camille Sullivan, Autum Walker-Cornell, Zac Branham, Elizabeth Talbert, Jay Lynch, Caitlyn Simon, Caden Britton and Greta Tautkus -- participated in "speed booking" during their lunch period. The event was coordinated by Jennifer Lanier, a University of South Carolina intern under the supervision of Anne Lemieux. Arrants speaks to CCTC students

Josh Arrants, naturalist and C-I columnist, speaks to students in Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) Natural Resources Management program Feb. 26 about the Red-cockaded Woodpecker Restoration Project at Fort Jackson. Arrants, a 2002 CCTC graduate, is a member of the S.C. Wildlife Federal Board, a Fort Jackson Wildlife Technician and former Camden resident who recently moved to Austin, Texas. He is returning frequently to work on the Fort Jackson project and continues to write his column. The students listening to Arrants' lecture are in NRM Department Chair Joshua Castleberry's class.

Kershaw County School District (KCSD) officials offered a list of deferred maintenance projects to the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees' finance/facilities committee Tuesday.
