KCSD tops in academic performance

The Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) grade on the 2013 state report card was a high B -- only 1.3 percentage points below an A -- while local third through eighth graders' PASS scores were higher than state averages in 37 of 40 categories. More than 83 percent of KCSD students passed the state's high school exit exam (HSAP) on their first attempt.

Back to School Bash Saturday at KCRD

The Kershaw County Back to School Bash takes place Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon or until supplies last at the Kershaw County Recreation Department, 1042 West DeKalb St. in Camden. All school supplies are free.

‘School Tools’ now open for business

For more than 10 years, Kershaw County residents have helped provide school supplies for more than 2,000 local needy students through the district's "School Tools" program. In order to make it more convenient for persons to participate this year, a special account has been set up at First Citizens Bank where donations can be dropped off or sent through the mail.

Students awarded James and Nell Smith Scholarships

Seven students were awarded the James and Nell Smith Scholarship for the 2013 academic school year. Trinity Baptist Church of Lugoff administers the scholarships and selects recipients based on the qualifications expressed by James and Nell Smith. Students receive scholarships based on their academic standing, active membership in a Kershaw Baptist Association church and need. Scholarship recipients must also attend college in South Carolina.

New principals announced for CES, Pine Tree

Carol Przybyla and Melissa Royalty are the new principals for Camden and Pine Tree Hill elementary schools, respectively. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees approved Przybyla as principal of Camden Elementary School and Royalty as principal of Pine Tree Hill Elementary School at its June 27 meeting.

Some SS/HS programs could end in 2014

Some programs will continue, some may change and some may close as funding ends for the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant in 2014. SS/HS Initiative Director Kevin Rhodes briefed the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees on the possible changes during its meeting Thursday.
