Godbold-Nash scholarships awarded

Gayle Pitts and ALPHA Center Executive Director Paul Napperrecently presented the annual Goldbash-Nash Memorial Ride Scholarships to graduating Kershaw County School District seniors at the ALPHA Center. This year's recipients are Kelly Duncan, Lugoff-Elgin High School ; and Mack Trapp, Camden High School. Accompanying Duncan were ATEC teachers Chet Horton and Jeff Cooper. Residents provide Phase II feedback

Kershaw County citizens have helped the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) get an idea of what it needs to present to voters in order to get a Phase II bond referendum passed. Phase II delineates projects remaining following new school construction and renovations funded by a 2006 Kershaw County Board of School Trustees-approved $102 million installment purchase plan, or IPP.

Books for L-EMS students

Using grant funds from Rotary District 7770, the West Wateree Rotary Club recently donated a collection of books to Lugoff-Elgin Middle School. Titles included books focused on character building, award winners, and summer reading titles. Students assisting with the unpacking include Trey Stevens, Abby Gary, Marie Neville, Abby Davis, Tyler Matthews, Emily Branham and teacher Karen Bullard.

CHS newspaper wins first Palmetto Award in 14 years

Camden High School's (CHS) Palmetto Leaf newspaper staff won a total of eight awards from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) in April. For the first time since 1999, the Leaf won the Palmetto Award for its class level, Class 1, according to newspaper advisor Amy Goodwin. This is Goodwin's first year back at CHS; she is a CHS graduate and previously taught at the school. Goodwin has been a newspaper advisor for about 19 years.

School board delays substitute teacher vote

A decision to hire a corporate staffing agency to provide substitute teachers in the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) will wait a little longer. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees decided to put off a vote to hire Kelly Services at its meeting Tuesday night.
