The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees unanimously passed, 6-0, the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) $69 million budget for the 2013-14 school year. Trustees Louis Clyburn, Don Copley and Nissary Wood were absent from the June 4 meeting at the district's offices.

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees is set to approve its preliminary 2013-14 budget of around $69 million at its meeting Tuesday night. That is despite the fact that Kershaw County Council has yet to respond to the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) millage request. In addition, as of Friday, South Carolina legislators had yet to pass the Fiscal Year 2014 state budget.
Christian Home Educators of Camden (CHEC) recognized five graduates at its 16th annual Night of Recognition May 24. The graduation ceremony was at Faith Church of the Nazarene in Lugoff. CHEC is a local home school support group with members hailing from Kershaw County and surrounding areas.
Gayle Pitts and ALPHA Center Executive Director Paul Napperrecently presented the annual Goldbash-Nash Memorial Ride Scholarships to graduating Kershaw County School District seniors at the ALPHA Center. This year's recipients are Kelly Duncan, Lugoff-Elgin High School ; and Mack Trapp, Camden High School. Accompanying Duncan were ATEC teachers Chet Horton and Jeff Cooper. Kershaw County citizens have helped the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) get an idea of what it needs to present to voters in order to get a Phase II bond referendum passed. Phase II delineates projects remaining following new school construction and renovations funded by a 2006 Kershaw County Board of School Trustees-approved $102 million installment purchase plan, or IPP.
Using grant funds from Rotary District 7770, the West Wateree Rotary Club recently donated a collection of books to Lugoff-Elgin Middle School. Titles included books focused on character building, award winners, and summer reading titles.
