Bringing poetry to the people

Allan Wolf, a poet, author and performer, has a goal in mind when he performs before an audience -- it is, as he says, "to show people how to see the world in a different way and (how) to find the extraordinariness of the ordinary." Wolf has written books for both elementary school age children as well as for young adult audiences.

KCSD prepping teachers for Common Core

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is helping teachers get ready for implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. KCSD Executive Director for K-12 Instruction Tim Hopkins and KCSD Common Core Transition Specialist Lisa Carter updated the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees on the district's work to prepare for next year's Common Core implementation at Tuesday's school board meeting. Hopkins and Carter focused on how teachers would be adequately prepared with both training and resources to implement the standards.

Single vehicle collision results in two deaths

A single vehicle collision on I-20 west bound at the 105 mile marker resulted in two fatalities early Saturday morning. Gladys Gholston, 71, was driving the 2005 Toyota with her husband Weldon Gholston, 86. The couple, from New York, was traveling west on I-20 and was in the process of relocating to South Carolina. The driver of the vehicle ran off of the highway and into the median where the car struck a tree and caught on fire. The accident is under investigation.

March 7, May 26 KCSD weather ‘make-up days’

Due to forecasted winter storms, Kershaw County School District (KCSD) schools and offices were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and all after school extracurricular activities, meetings and programs originally scheduled for those days were cancelled.

PAWS program at MES to help students realize goals

Midway Elementary School (MES) landed a $272,000 state grant recently to start an afterschool and summer Positive Achievement with Students (PAWS) program. Teachers Teri Davis, Selena Jones, Laura Privette and Katie Todd collaborated to write the grant.

Students break ground on prayer garden at L-EHS

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) students from various school organizations are moving forward with plans to build a prayer garden at the school. L-EHS seniors Casey Swails and Tyler Hand, who are leading the project, wanted to make it clear that the garden's purpose isn't to honor a particular class or students.

School board approves legislative positions

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees unanimously approved a set of legislative positions during its meeting Tuesday for the 2014 S.C. General Assembly. According to a memo provided to the board from Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan, the board received a draft of the position at its Nov. 18, 2013 session. At the time, trustees requested additional information on Common Core standards and S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley's proposed education reforms.

Fitness Zone donates to KCSD

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees recently accepted a $1,600 donation from George Gibson, owner and manager of the Fitness Zone in Lugoff. The money comes from proceeds earned during the sixth annual Jingle Bell Run sponsored by Fitness Zone in December.

Decoda with Claire Bryant to perform at FAC Thursday

The members of Decoda chamber ensemble, lead by Claire Bryant, entered the gym at North Central Middle School one by one, each playing their respective instrument. The students of the eighth grade sat, rapt with attention, as the instruments' melodies blended in unison before them.

KCSD ahead financially for school year so far

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is already ahead financially for the current school year by more than $500,000, according to KCSD Chief Financial Officer Donnie Wilson. Wilson presented November and December's district finances to the Kershaw County Board of Trustees during its meeting Tuesday morning.
