A book a day

As part of Doby's Mill Elementary School's Farm to School grant, which encourages students to eat locally grown fruits and vegetables, the library was able to purchase dozens of books on gardening and healthy cooking and eating. On a recent visit to the library, students Keymoni Hill, Mitchell Loudermilk, Ashton Horton, and Kayden Melvin hungrily perused some of the new selections.

KCSD exceeds S.C. average on state report cards

In a climate where academic performance targets make significant jumps every three years, 94 percent of the Absolute ratings issued today for Kershaw County schools are Excellent, Good or Average. Statewide, only 84 percent of schools had Absolute ratings of Average or above.

Flag crew

Members of the Doby's Mill Elementary School Flagship Club are responsible for putting up and taking down the flags each day. They work as a team to ensure that it is properly raised and lowered. Here, club members Damion Powell, Luke Williams and Riley Cleghon perform their duties. Bill Heil and several fellow members of American Legion Post 195 visited the school last year to teach third-, fourth- and fifth-graders who were participating in the club how to fold each flag, as well as the etiquette for raising and lowering the flags. They are reading coaches, the first part of a South Carolina initiative being implemented under the "Read to Succeed Act" passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Nikki Haley in June.

School AD, head football coaches to stay combined

The positions of athletic director (AD) and head football coach at Kershaw County School District (KCSD) will remain combined. Lugoff-Elgin High School's (L-EHS) currently separate AD and head football coach will be combined back into a single position at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
