A legacy of books

Betsy McLeod picks out Birthday Book Club books for her two grandchildren, Connor and Caleb McLeod, during Camden Elementary School's Grandparent's Day. Launched by Camden Elementary Partners/PTO years ago, Birthday Book Club is an ongoing effort to add new books to the school's library. Grandparents purchase a book in honor of their grandchildren, and the book is then donated to the school's library. Teacher earns science award

Camden Middle School teacher Valerie Willis thought it was a big honor to be nominated for the 2011 Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award and was thrilled to earn the top award for South Carolina. So when she learned that she also received the honor for the whole Southeast region, she was even more flattered.

Feature photo: Mentor cadets

Under the direction of Col. Ret. Webb, the Camden High School JROTC Bulldog Battalion comes to Jackson School on every Monday and Wednesday to mentor 2nd grade students. Our second grade students have the opportunity to see the cadets in uniform as leaders. The cadets also read with students and assist them with Accelerated Reader Tests. This is a great collaboration between Jackson and Camden High School. Third graders participate in summer reading program

Third graders from around Kershaw County recently completed the county's first summer reading program. Students came to Jackson School for six weeks for classes that helped them improve their reading skills.
