Special day for special athletes

With sirens blaring and lights flashing, police cars escorted several buses through town as well-wishers waved and cheered from points along the route. Their destination was Camden Military Academy for the annual Kershaw County Special Olympics.

Forty students at North Central Middle School, along with five adults, attended the S.C. Statewide Read-In April 4 at the S.C. State House in Columbia. This makes the twelfth year NCM students have attended this event that celebrates the importance of reading. Over three thousand students from around the state were in attendance this year. School board wants to tie SROs to growth funding

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees, likely along with Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan and Chief Financial Officer Donnie Wilson, will present its preliminary budget to Kershaw County Council tonight.

USC Upstate names local students to Chancellor's List

USC Upstate recently named three area students to the Fall 2016 Chancellor's List. They were Kayla Brown and Kensey Stephens of Camden and Danielle James of Elgin.

New ATEC design unveiled

The new Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) will sport a revised design when it is completed in mid-2019. Thanks to voter-approved referenda authorizing Kershaw County School District (KCSD) construction projects and a penny sales tax to fund them, ATEC is being moved from U.S. 1 in east Camden to the joint Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) and Kershaw County Economic Development site off U.S. 521 near I-20 Exit 98.

Another CMA cadet to get West Point ‘experience’

For the second year in a row, a Camden Military Academy (CMA) cadet will attend the U.S. Military Academy's Summer Leadership Experience (SLE) at West Point in New York. Cadet Staff Sgt. Jack Allen Furlow, 17, will attend the SLE June 3-9, just as fellow CMA cadet Jake Dean did in 2016.

School board to begin ‘detailed review’ of budget

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will begin a "detailed review" of the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) preliminary 2017-18 budget tonight. Two weeks ago, KCSD Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan presented the proposed $81 million budget to the board as information. Now, the board will begin going through that proposal in an effort to determine what, if any changes, it might want to make.
