School accountability/report system proposed

The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will hear a presentation during its meeting tonight about a proposed combined accountability/report system developed by the S.C. Education Oversight Committee (EOC). The S.C. General Assembly directed the EOC to develop the proposal under legislation passed during its 2016 session. The EOC adopted the proposal in January and it is supposed to meet federal and state requirements.

CHS 9th graders learn ‘The Value of Education’

On the morning of Feb. 13, a large number of Camden High School (CHS) ninth graders filled up tables set up on the ground floor of the Price House. They were there to hear CHS coaches Dennis Beckley and Natalie Jeffcoat, Camden Middle School (CMS) Principal Byron Johnson and former Temple University professor Dr. Ernestyne Adams talk about "The Value of Education," the theme of the Price House Commission's Black History Month program. Price House Commissioner Clifton H. Anderson organized the program.

BDK is finalist for state reading award

In 2012, Baron DeKalb Elementary (BDK) received the state's Exemplary Writing Program Award. This year, the school is one of four finalists for a state award to recognize its Exemplary Reading Program.

Elgin native wins 'STEM Oscar'

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer Dwayne Nelson recently walked the proverbial red carpet. Nelson, a native of Elgin, South Carolina and a 2000 graduate of North Central High School, was one of 41 engineers nationwide to win a 2017 Black Engineer of the Year Award, held at a special gala in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 11.

Dinner, dance for special needs students tonight

Last year, Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) hosted a prom for special needs students that was planned by other LEHS students. This year, the celebration is being held in conjunction with Valentine's Day.
