Preliminary KCSD budget begins 'healing process'

Things are looking up for the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) new budget. KCSD Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan presented the $65.4 million preliminary 2012-2013 budget at Tuesday's Kershaw County Board of School Trustees meeting.

L-EHS mourns loss of student

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) held a moment of silence Monday in memory of a 16-year-old female student who committed suicide Friday. L-EHS offered counseling assistance to both students and staff.

Lessons for life

On Tuesdays at Midway Elementary School, second-grade classes are often found being led by a special instructor. Kershaw County Deputy Mechelle Cobb enriches the students' usual social studies lessons with instruction on the importance of law enforcement in the community and strategies for dealing with conflict and bullying. Cobb also serves as a mentor for students. She works with students YaKeem Knox, MaKhi Holmes, Summer Martin and Matty Stephens. Cobb and students Summer Martin, Yakeem Knox and Chris Crane visit with K-9 deputy Hailey and Lt. Ty Cobb.

'Insufficient evidence' in Title IX allegations

"Insufficient evidence." That's the word from a federal civil rights office regarding Title IX federal funding allegations against Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, forbids sex discrimination in any activity receiving financial federal assistance.

Kershaw County Board of School Trustees members Carol Thompson (left) and Kim DuRant (right) were recognized by the S.C. School Boards Association (SCSBA) with special lapel pins for reaching milestones in their years of service on the board.
