KH board lauds longest serving members as transition begins

The KershawHealth Board of Trustees congratulated three of their own Monday night as they met for the last time as the governing body of the county's public hospital. When members meet again Nov. 9, they will do so as trustees of the Health Services District of Kershaw County. They will do so not at the Health Resource Center where they did Monday night, but at the Karesh Long Term Care Center, the only aspect of healthcare delivery in the county the board will oversee.

‘Final’ KH board meeting tonight

At 6 p.m. today, the KershawHealth Board of Trustees will meet for the final time as the authoritative body governing all aspects of KershawHealth operations. Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and MUSC Health -- the healthcare providing arm of the Medical University of South Carolina -- are set to take over most KershawHealth operations Sunday at 12:01 a.m.

KH board transfers contract authority to new chairman

In August, the KershawHealth Board of Trustees granted authority to former Chair Karen Eckford to sign documents on behalf of the board in connection with the pending takeover of most hospital functions by Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health. In late September, Eckford signed three documents constituting final agreements between KershawHealth and Kershaw Hospital LLC -- representing the Capella/MUSC partnership -- to purchase certain hospital assets; to lease the main hospital and Elgin center for 40 years; and for Capella to at least temporarily manage the Karesh Long Term Center, of which the board will retain control.

Ogburn, Tidwell to lead KershawHealth board

Members of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees voted Monday night for Derial Ogburn and Wayne Tidwell to serve, respectively, as chairman and vice chairman as the board transitions to overseeing, primarily, the Karesh Long-Term Care Center.

KershawHealth earns Zero Harm awards again

For the second year in a row, KershawHealth earned two Zero Harm awards during the S.C. Hospital Association and S.C. Medical Association's joint Trustees, Administrators and Physicians (TAP) Conference. The awards recognize the achievement of not having any -- literally, zero -- surgical site infections during elective hip and knee surgeries during the last 30 consecutive months.

"Now, we truly are prepared to move forward together with Capella/MUSC," KershawHealth Board of Trustees Chair Karen Eckford declared Friday morning before formally signing documents which will make Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and MUSC Health the operators of KershawHealth for the foreseeable future.

KH board to sign Capella contract today

Members of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees will formally sign its finalized agreement with Capella Healthcare today at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Med II waiting area of the main hospital campus at Roberts and Haile streets in Camden.

Capella contract signing ‘just days away’

Final details of the contract between the KershawHealth Board of Trustees; Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn.; and MUSC Health, the patient care arm of the Medical University of South Carolina, are, apparently, still being worked out.

Although KershawHealth's sale to Capella Healthcare and takeover by the Franklin, Tenn., company in conjunction with MUSC Health is a done deal, the hospital's board of trustees will still receive and update and legal advice on the transaction during its meeting tonight.

KershawHealth board holds special meeting tonight

The KershawHealth Board of Trustees is calling a special meeting for 6 p.m. today at the Health Resource Center on Battleship Road in Camden. The special meeting could signal a finalization of an agreement with Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and MUSC Health -- the patient care arm of the Medical University of South Carolina -- to take over KershawHealth's operations. The move would convert KershawHealth from a public hospital overseen by the board, which is appointed by Kershaw County Council, to a for-profit enterprise.

Monday is deadline for KH/Capella deal

Monday is deadline day for KershawHealth, Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and MUSC Health -- the patient care arm of the Medical University of South Carolina. Monday marks the latest expiration date for a letter of agreement for Capella and MUSC Health to take over operations of the county's public hospital, converting it to a for-profit business.
