Thanks, Mayor

Thank you, Mayor Tony Scully, for your "Downtown" column in last week's newspaper. It was informative to read about several projects, activities, and issues being explored by our city. We would encourage you to continue keeping all of us aware of topics like these. And please include your contact information should any of us wish to participate in the dialogue. Again, thanks!

Gun permits

In reply to the letter on open carry, it is true that many persons do not apply for a permit because it is a form of registration. The government may not know what type of firearm you have, but they will know, unless you used a borrowed firearm to take a class, that you have a firearm. Many do not want to go through the hassle of reapplying every few years for a permit. At the start of the current shall-issue law instead of the old may-issue law, the anti-gun members in the legislature wanted to make it as inconvenient ...

Mr. Jones’ deplorable attack

After giving much thought to the article "Jones targets KershawHealth at Tuesday KCC meeting" in the February 15, 2013, edition of the Chronicle-Independent, remaining silent is no longer an option. The fact that Mr. Jones voted to approve the purchase of two ambulances for KershawHealth is overshadowed by his deplorable attack on the administration and members of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees.

Protecting our schools

Yes, there are crazies walking among us, even in the U.S. government, but I ask you to keep things in perspective. They are not standing on every street corner with assault weapons waiting to slaughter school children. As sad as the Sandy Hook situation was, and as much as we all would like to undo that travesty, it is a very, very rare occurrence. And for those of you who would say "if your child was involved you would not see it that way," you are right. I would be thinking emotionally, not logically. But realistically, how many reading ...

Power of the Ballot Box

I appreciated your thoughtful and instructive commentary in the February 25, 2013, issue of the Chronicle-Independent regarding the "Citizens United" situation. It is important for those of us who are struggling to pay our bills and to provide the necessary health insurance for our families to understand the consequences of the new attempts to help rig the democratic process in favor of those who can (because of their wealth) buy elections. The conservative activist, Shawn McCutcheon from Alabama, with the support of the Republican National Committee, is challenging how much individuals can contribute to candidates, parties and even to Political ...

Join American Cancer Society study

It's often far too easy to underestimate the importance of cancer research … until you hear the words "you have cancer."

Unemployment

Recently, unemployment rates for African-American communities rose. History has taught us where there is high unemployment, the community will be unstable and the standard of living relative to other communities is going to decline and the prison rate will rise.

Miller Orchestra still going strong

Reading your article recently about Paul Tanner it appears from your last paragraph that you think the Glenn Miller Orchestra is no more. To the contrary. It is still the number one big band in the world. They travel worldwide. They were recently in Asheville N.C. at the Grove Park Inn's "Big Band Weekend" along with the Tommy Dorsey Band. Nick Hilscher is the current Director. Nick is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Pondering...

As a senior citizen I ponder a lot. It seems the older I get the more pondering I do. I watch the news, read a book or two, read the papers, read my Bible, and here are some things that cross my mind.
