Spend wisely

We have been hearing about the City of Camden and the Y. First of all, I would like to point out there is no binding agreement that I am aware of between these organizations. Next, let's look at the YMCA history for Camden.

Graham misrepresents

In his campaign ad titled "Focusing on Our Future" in the Oct. 10 edition of the C-I, Mayor Graham takes credit for several items that bear correction. First, his ad states that he is responsible for bringing the Farmers Market to downtown Camden. If my recollection of the particulars is correct, this statement is patently false. The year was 2005 and it was Rep. Laurie Funderburk and Andy Rollins with the Clemson Extension Service who wrote a small grant, the Bank of Camden (now First Community Bank) loaned the market the use of the lot, somebody else donated the tables ...

Vote ‘Yes’ for values

As we approach the vote on the city referendum, I wanted to comment on my support for the YMCA as the third party to run our sports complex.

Council's actions disappointing

As a retired educator I am very disappointed with a couple of decisions that the Kershaw County Council has made.

‘Y’ can’t solve all problems

I doubt there is a soul in this town who wouldn't agree that the YMCA is a wonderful institution. It is, but the miracles writers claim it will bring leave me wondering why every town hasn't built one yesterday!

Time running out for honest taxpayers

(Editor's Note: the C-I was unable to print this letter prior to Kershaw County Council's Oct. 9 meeting. Despite the timing, we believe the author has the right for his opinion to be viewed by the public during this election season. The letter has been edited to reflect that council's meeting took place prior to publication.)

Shameful behavior

I am truly flabbergasted and ashamed. Some of the same people, including educators, who chastised county council for the way they treated students, for not putting students first, and telling them they (council) should be ashamed of themselves, were some of the same people who made a mass exodus during Councilman Bobby Gary's announcement of a "Proclamation for Amari Williams' Got Heart Day" after the millage increase for the school district failed.

‘My name is Kershaw County’

My name is Kershaw County. I am located in the state of South Carolina and I possess approximately 740 square miles, and I claim to have approximately 60,000 citizens that live in me. I have a lot to boast about, so much that I cannot begin to tell of them. I am proud of my citizens and I depend on them to make me what I am. I am only as good as my people. That I know!

Is Cushman being thrown under the bus?

I find perplexing the arrest of Charles Cushman (former Camden city attorney) for allegedly breaching his duties by "intentionally dismissing and/or Nolle Prossing criminal charges under the condition that a donation be made by the defense to the Camden City Drug Fund." If he is found guilty, there is no way I can condone such activity. However, I feel some amount of empathy toward Mr. Cushman. In part because I personally like him, but mostly because I feel he is being "thrown under the bus" by the city. Keep in mind, this has been allegedly going on for seven ...

The recreation center/YMCA vote

I wrote my first letter on this subject in April 2011, my second in July 2011 and subsequently addressed the city council on the subject. I see little has changed except that the council has resolved to continue the project while refusing to resolve legitimate concerns about the legal, economic and potential negative community impact of the proposal. For many of us who have lived in this community for many years and tried to leave it better than we found it, this is a sad reflection on what has been a wonderful and cooperative history.

Y is epitome of ‘community’

We all aspire to live in a viable and strong community. Camden has history, beautiful churches, restaurants, public parks, nice wide streets and tennis courts. And to think we have the opportunity to move forward with a recreation center to be managed by the YMCA! Having grown up in a city with a Y to which my family belonged, I know that a Y can be a place to enhance the quality of life for citizens of all ages.

‘We The People’

We the People have the power to make changes in Congress. In fact, In November, members of Congress that are seeking reelection and have not been serving our country and its people (as they should have been) can be eliminated by voting for another that is best suited to serve the people (even a write-in candidate.) "The people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand those high qualities ...

We need a leader

In reading several editorials in various media lately, yours seems to be on the same theme that the god Obama needs to be given four more years to finishing destroying this country. He hasn't been able to do what he needs to do so let's give him some more time. Time to lecture us on how we should not speak ill of anyone unless they do not have liberal ideas. Time to keep saying everything is not my fault and you need to blame someone else (just who is he going to blame if reelected). Time to lecture ...

‘Just say no’

For some time now, I have been attending Camden City Council meetings, reading letters to the C-I editor and participating in citizen meetings supporting a sports facility referendum.

Loving ‘Mrs. Montgomery’

I love Mrs. Montgomery. I am sure many of my former classmates enjoyed Harvey Teal's October 1 (Kershaw County Historical Society column), "A visit with 'Coota' Montgomery." I still find it very difficult to address her as Coota. She will always be Mrs. Montgomery to me.
