Pondering...

As a senior citizen I ponder a lot. It seems the older I get the more pondering I do. I watch the news, read a book or two, read the papers, read my Bible, and here are some things that cross my mind.

Carolina and Clemson football

The college football season is over and many football widows are excited about that. Now on Saturdays the honey-do list may get a little more attention. For Carolina and Clemson fans, it's been a great season. Both teams were 11-2, won exciting dramatic bowl games and were ranked in the top 10 nationally in the final coaches' poll.

Moral and spiritual death

Once again we are faced with a horrible massacre at a school. This time it was a Connecticut elementary school. As frustrating to every American as they are devastating to those immediately involved, my prayers are with those suffering beyond my imagination.

Saddened by all of us

I never failed to get excited after coming home from my travels and seeing the Kershaw County line sign as I'm heading towards home. I have such fond memories of growing up here, being in elementary school in Pine Tree Hill and waiting for the Christmas parade on Broad Street, visiting the Kershaw County Library and being read to by the librarians there, playing tennis at Rectory Square and Hampton Park, swimming, boating and skiing at Lake Wateree, running at Scott Park, eating a burger at BSL or Little Midget or, if you're old enough to remember, even ...

Officers need radar training

My son was recently pulled over and given a speeding ticket by a county officer for allegedly going 58 mph in a 45 mph zone. I don't dispute the fact that my son was speeding due to I wasn't in the car with my son, and children at 16 children don't often tell the truth to their parents. However, while in court my son refused to plead guilty due to he, as I do, believing in the justice system and that we live in a county where you will get a fair and impartial hearing. At my ...

Grateful for KershawHealth

The year 2012 was a deeply challenging one for me and my family. We faced a number of life-changing events. From the beginning of the year to the end, KershawHealth -- in various ways -- was a part of our journey. There could be no better companion for the rough road we traveled.

Living on Social Security

This mother/mother-in-law lives on Social Security and a part-time job. Obama's mother-in-law lives in the White House on our taxes and wants for nothing. Social Security tells us we can't make but so much money or they will take back one dollar for every two dollars we make over. Now, when you turn 65, you have to pay Medicare out of your Social Security; then you have to pay supplemental insurance, both over $100. Now, the IRS will take 2 percent more taxes out on Social Security. People can draw unemployment and do nothing and live very ...

Guns and gun laws not the problem

Guns and gun laws are not the problem of deaths in the United States. To solve lots of our violent crimes, the whole nation has to stop ignoring the needs of mentally ill people. We, as a nation, have to stop the bullying, which I feel is the reason why lots of gangs are formed and lots of suicides and mass murders are committed.
