We at Let Freedom Ring do want to publicly state what happened to Congresswoman Giffords and everyone in attendance at the "Meet the Congresswoman" event at a Safeway Grocery store in Tucson on Jan. 8 was a tragedy and we pray for the full recovery of all who were wounded and pray for the families of those who were slain. I ask the local Tea Party to also make similar public sentiments.
I had an old aluminum jon boat stolen from my property in late August of last year. Imagine my surprise when I received a call from Kershaw County Sheriff's Office Investigator Justin Dill Jan. 14, informing me that they had arrested the individuals responsible for the theft. Although the boat was not recoverable, the suspects were in custody.
It has always been a fantasy of mine to write something that my local newspaper would publish. Thinking too hard, I just could not come up with anything. It's right in front of me now and so easy to write. Easy to say, easy to write. Truth and reality!
Here is my take on the law escort fee for funerals. I agree there should be a fee, just not as much as proposed. It was stated that it takes deputies away from their patrol. If this is the case the school board has to be charged for the traffic control before and after school, because we have more schools in this county than SROs to handle this task so that takes deputies away from their patrol. ...
I recently came across the following statement, "The Law in the U.S. requires three elements to be present in any crime: the Act, Intent and Damage (mens rea -- willful intent, actus reus -- act or crime, corpus delicti -- body of the crime, the actual damage). It is estimated that 90 percent of the people prosecuted by the courts in the U.S. committed no crime." That is a very powerful statement. Basically what ...
The kings and queens who rule over the education of our children and spend 42 cents of every dollar they receive on them are building a new and wonderful palace. Their kingdom is vast as they are the largest employer in all of Kershaw County. They purchase property across this land, sometimes at higher than market value. The kings and queens lay off teachers first while keeping the palace staff; after all, they must ...
From all of the staff at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, we would like to thank everyone for their support. The Chronicle-Independent has graciously hosted the "Pet of the Week" and thanks to their help, hundreds of dogs and cats have found new homes!
As we start 2011, let's take time out to thank your county leaders and administration for a great year in 2010.
In addition to Steve Parrott's letter of Dec. 22th I would like to add my concerns about the dangerous intersection at U.S. 1 and Springdale Drive and the numerous accidents there. I am also a resident of the Springdale area and see logging trucks as a big problem, but so are other vehicles. The 45-mph speed limit approaching the final curve at Wal-Mart needs to be lowered to 35 mph. Drivers go zooming in ...
If people are going to criticize the school board and school district superintendent for how money is spent, researching first is in order. In South Carolina, facilities and personnel are separate "pots" of money and cannot be mixed. Spending money to build does not affect money for teachers.
As we look back on 2010, one cannot but be proud of our wonderful community with all of its heritage, history and opportunities for the future. Two very important aspects of our community which set us apart from so many others are the number of community based organizations and the generous contributors who make up these organizations. One of these organizations, which made such significant contributions to our community over the past number of ...
My family and I have unfortunately been through the loss of my youngest brother recently. With this being totally unexpected and the first time making arrangements for an immediate family member, we contacted Robbie Powers of Powers Funeral Home.
If our school board and the superintendent of education spent as much time on education as they do on acquiring property, maybe we would be able to do a more credible job of education.
It's the holidays and everyone enjoys being off of work and spending time with their family. So naturally the courthouse and Kershaw County offices were closed for five days straight. What? Yes, they were closed Dec. 23-27. Let me think … what holiday is the 27th? Oh yeah, it's the Monday after Christmas. Everyone celebrates that holiday, right? Even the banks can't close for more than three days in a row.
Dylan Sims, a student columnist from North Central High School, and Christina Stokes, a Camden High School student columnist, are to be commended for their recent articles: Dylan's "Christmas Carols offer more than just a catchy tune" in the Dec. 10 edition and Christina's "Show your Christmas spirit by sharing your blessings" in Friday's edition.
I am concerned about the future of the recreation facilities in Kershaw County. Much has been said and many things have been proposed. The county and the city must work together for a better Kershaw County.
