Photo cutline -- West cited by West Germany -- Knight Commander of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was conferred upon former Governor John C. West last night by Consul General Dr. Ernst Ingendaay of West Germany. The award was presented "in recognition of your valuable contribution to the strengthening of friendly relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the U.S.A." Dr. Ingendaay declared that, during the West administration, South Carolina "was opened for our country as a preferred investment ground."

Photo cutline -- Wilson Mills of Camden laughs with Johnny Crowell, one of aviation's great early pioneers, during a luncheon Saturday at the Holiday Inn. Crowell was here for a meeting of the OX-5 Pioneers, a group made up primarily of men who were active in the early days of aviation. Crowell, 85, presented Mills with a plaque "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in advancing aviation and for his assistance and friendship for half a century."
