Several Kershaw County students and advisors were recognized for their accomplishments at the August 5 school board meeting. Lugoff-Elgin High's tennis team, coached by Mitch Lowder and Trudy Reeves, finished fourth in State AA competition with an 11-3 record, the best in the school's history.
Former Camden High School Band Director William R. "Bill" Basden was honored with the President's Award for outstanding contribution to the support and development of bands given by Phi Beta Mu national bandmasters society.
The family of Julius Clyburn Connell has been selected as the Kershaw County Family of the Year by a committee composed of state agencies in the area. This family will compete for the title of South Carolina Family of the Year.
Elizabeth Ann Fischer, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, daughter of Betty and Richard Fischer of Camden has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Morris Newspaper Corporation for the 1990-91 scholastic year. A 1988 graduate of Camden High School, Miss Fischer is active in the S.C. Scholastic Press Association and the Southern Interscholarship Association.
The Charlotte Thompson community's annual barbecue is always a special rite of spring, along with flowering bulbs and budding trees. Now in its 45th year, the annual barbecue has been an enormous help to the Charlotte Thompson community and its residents have worked hard to make it a huge success each year. So many people have rendered yeoman service in this labor of love which is, indeed, a community effort.
