Getting three individual championships was nice, but it was a win in the consolation finals which provided the icing on the cake for the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team which captured last weekend's 31st annual Bearcat Invitational, hosted by Rock Hill High School.
There was no better way to wrap up what was a memorable 2010 for the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team than to end the past year with a championship.
Trailing former Region 3-AAA foe Chester heading into the finals of last weekend's 19th annual May Plant Credit Union Holiday Classic wrestling tournament, host Lugoff-Elgin used five winning performances (from as many wrestlers) in the championship finals to edge the Cyclones, 228-216, to capture its own event. <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; ...
When you have a new coach, sometimes you need to walk before you can run. That, in not so many words, is what first-year Lugoff-Elgin boys basketball coach, Derek Belton, told his team during a timeout after visiting Richland Northeast ripped off 12 straight points to take a 12-2 lead in the first quarter of Tuesday's Region 4-4A opener for both sides. Belton got his team to stop trying to force the issue against the ...
Shortly before she got loose for what was a game-winning layin, Kirsten Baker sat on the Lugoff-Elgin bench with an ice bag atop her head following a spill after being fouled with 1:41 left in Tuesday's game against visiting Richland Northeast.
Even though her team's score in Friday's win over rival Camden was nearly identical to that of Tuesday's 58-50 victory over Lancaster, Lugoff-Elgin girls basketball coach Von Duncan said the difference in play and emotion was off the charts.
Like a cold car engine which takes a few tries before starting up, Lugoff-Elgin's Jo Jo Pellegrino coughed and sputtered for the better part of three quarters of Friday's non-region game with rival Camden.

As steep as the learning curve was for the Lugoff-Elgin football team this past season, it may be an even greater challenge for the Demons' wrestlers, which will open a new chapter in the program's rich history tonight when York and 2009 4A state champion Rock Hill come into the Demons Den.
The Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team will host Rock Hill and York in Wednesday night's season-opening matches. The match was incorrectly printed as a Tuesday night contest in the Chronicle-Independent.
(Note: This article appeared in the Wednesday, Oct. 27 edition of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Since then, Wofford College earned a berth in the NCAA Football Championship Series playoffs. After a first round bye, the Southern Conference entry opens post-season play at Jacksonville State on Dec. 4.)
Staring down at 97 yards and a Lugoff-Elgin defense, which was trying to hold onto a 24-21 lead with less than six minutes remaining in Friday's state class 4A playoff opener, Ashley Ridge quarterback Cameron Cox saw more than green and brown grass in front of him.
Seeing is not believing. Just ask Sumter or several other Lugoff-Elgin opponents from the recently completed regular season.
