Camden’s Crim advocates for children in D.C.

Ja'Varis Crim, a Camden native and rising junior at the University of South Carolina where he is a political science major, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with South Carolina congressional leaders in an effort to advocate for children.

Scholarship winners

Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church recently presented its George Mason/Bessie Parker Memorial Scholarships at its annual youth worship services. The scholarships are awarded to members of LSUMC who are entering their first year of higher education. It is based upon participation in church activities, participation in school and community service and scholastic achievement. The scholarship honors Mason, a former sexton, gardener and caretaker at the church; and Parker, a former minister of visitation. Registration for swim lessons is underway at the Recreation Department. Registration for all lessons continues until the Thursday before the Monday lessons start. The first session runs June 1 - June 4 and June 8-June 11.

Rec Notes - April 17, 2015

Registration for Swim Team is now underway and will run through May 8. The cost is $70, with a $5 reduction for each additional child in the family. Children ages 4-18 are eligible to sign up for Swim Team. Season Pass members qualify for a $10 reduction per Swim Team member.

UWKC participating in summer food service program

The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children 18 years old or younger without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Honoring their own

The Kershaw County Democratic Women's Organization recently made a donation to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County to honor the contributions of several of their former members. Tributes were read and a check presented in their honor for Virginia Furman, Louisa Watkins and Pat Watts. FAC executive director Kristin Cobb accepted the donation at the meeting. "All of these women were very special to this community and certainly the Fine Arts Center. I am honored to accept this donation in their memory," Cobb said. Master Gardeners offer scholarship

Kershaw County Master Gardeners will be offering a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a deserving Kershaw County School District Senior to assist in their post secondary education in the pursuit of Agriculture and/or Horticulture Sciences. Applicants must be a Kershaw County School District graduating senior. Scholarship focus will be awarded on your vision to impact of the Agriculture and/or Horticulture industry.

Speaking of Sherman

Harvey Teal (standing), whose Kershaw County Historical Society columns appear monthly in the Chronicle-Independent, speaks to some 85 people at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church on Sunday, one of two speakers on the topic of Civl War Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's March through Kershaw County, via Liberty Hill, 150 years ago. Teal kept the large audience interested with displays and descriptions of local artificats.
