A small, single engine plane headed to an air festival in Lakeland, Fla., from Amherst, N.Y., crashed into a wooded area along Larry Jeffers Road near Elgin just before 2 p.m. Friday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). North Central High School (NCHS) was the recipient of a $5,000 gift from the International Paper Foundation. The money is being used to purchase reading materials for classrooms and the NCHC Media Center in order to enhance literacy across the curriculum initiative. Principal Worth Thomasson (right) said the International Paper Foundation made it possible for the school to benefit its students by encouraging them to read on a daily basis. Owners and fans of the Boykin spaniel gathered in the South Carolina midlands last week for the 2014 National Field Trial. The event was a "homecoming" of sorts for the Boykin spaniel breed that originated in the early 1900s in Boykin. The Boykin spaniel became the official state dog of South Carolina in 1985.
