Columbia Northeast American Legion Post No. 182 presented Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Investigator Justin Dill with a special law enforcement award for "outstanding public service." Dill received the award Feb. 8 at the post's annual public safety awards dinner at Fort Jackson.
More than 50 firefighters from across the county used a training drill March 17 at South Carolina Yutaka Technologies to prepare for real-life emergencies.
South Carolina agricultural vendors, restaurants and artisans are invited to a Kershaw County Farmers Market (KCFM) vendor open house to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the FCL (Extension Homemakers) Building, 634 W. DeKalb St., Camden.
The James Leroy Belk Post 17, American Legion, recently responded to two flag-related requests in the community. The Lugoff Fire Department asked the post for a replacement flag to fly at the station and Midway Elementary School requested a new halyard (rope) to replace the worn one on its flagpole.
Elgin Mayor Brad Hanley and Elgin Town Council members Melissa Emmons and Norman "Bubba" Ernst were sworn into office during a ceremony March 1 at Blaney Baptist Church in Elgin.

Mr. Rick, also known as Rick Benton of Fun Time Clowning and Magic, recently visited Midway Elementary School where he delighted the students and faculty with his performance that mixed sleight of hand with lessons on good character and getting along in life. The Leslie M. Stover Middle School Band program reports an outstanding season. The band began the year with a successful winter concert performance, which featured instrumental soloists and seasonal music. This year, 50 Stover band students won chairs in the All-Region Band, more than any other school in the region. The school also had six students win chairs in the prestigious All-State Band: (bass clarinetist) Andrew Place; (snare) Andrew Walker; (trumpet alternate) Ansley Potter; (trumpet alternate) Erin Blizzard; (trombone alternate) Jessica Lumpkin; and (tuba alternate) Amber Vance. Membership dues are down $7,596 from a year ago at the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, according to a report given by Chamber Treasurer Dennis Stuber during Thursday's board of directors meeting.
After 48 hours of classroom instruction and practical training, 12 volunteers with the Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department are now trained as medical first responders.
