Post 17 to host oratorical contest
An orientation for potential participants in the James Leroy Belk American Legion Post No. 17 Annual High School Oratorical Contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the post's home on West DeKalb Street in Camden. Contest officials will discuss the subject to be used for oration and explain the contest rules.

Jak Smyrl collection purchased by USC library
The University of South Carolina (USC) Libraries is now home to a collection of more than 5,000 images, plus correspondence, sketchbooks, and even early elementary-school artwork Camden's Oscar Jackson "Jak" Smyrl, The State newspaper's first staff artist, who passed away in 2007.
