Registration for swim lessons is underway at the Recreation Department. Registration for all lessons continues until the Thursday before the Monday lessons start. The first session runs June 1 - June 4 and June 8-June 11.

Rec Notes - April 17, 2015

Registration for Swim Team is now underway and will run through May 8. The cost is $70, with a $5 reduction for each additional child in the family. Children ages 4-18 are eligible to sign up for Swim Team. Season Pass members qualify for a $10 reduction per Swim Team member.

UWKC participating in summer food service program

The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children 18 years old or younger without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Honoring their own

The Kershaw County Democratic Women's Organization recently made a donation to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County to honor the contributions of several of their former members. Tributes were read and a check presented in their honor for Virginia Furman, Louisa Watkins and Pat Watts. FAC executive director Kristin Cobb accepted the donation at the meeting. "All of these women were very special to this community and certainly the Fine Arts Center. I am honored to accept this donation in their memory," Cobb said. Master Gardeners offer scholarship

Kershaw County Master Gardeners will be offering a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a deserving Kershaw County School District Senior to assist in their post secondary education in the pursuit of Agriculture and/or Horticulture Sciences. Applicants must be a Kershaw County School District graduating senior. Scholarship focus will be awarded on your vision to impact of the Agriculture and/or Horticulture industry.

C-I brings home SCPA awards

The Chronicle-Independent brought home several third place and honorable mention awards from this year's annual meeting of the S.C. Press Association.

Eagle Scout

Christopher Wilder achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor ceremony Nov. 22, 2014. Christopher's required service project included improvements to the facilities at Goodale State Park near Camden. The son of Keith and Kelly Wilder of Elgin, Christopher is a member of Boy Scout Troop 316 sponsored by St. John's United Methodist Church. A senior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, Christopher plans to attend Central Carolina Technical College next fall.

PAL Baseball is a non-competitive baseball league for youth and adults with disabilities and special needs, and typically-able youth with assistance from "Pals" available on the team. PAL Baseball is for individuals who do not want to play competitively. Children with special needs as well as children who do not like the physical competition of other leagues can enjoy the fun of PAL Baseball.

Food for the Soul golf tournament April 2

Golfers can greet the long-awaited spring weather on the fairways and putting greens in early April, while they help feed the hungry and shelter the homeless of Kershaw County. Food for the Soul will host its annual golf tournament April 2 at the Camden Country Club. The tournament, which begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, will raise funds to support Food for the Soul's soup kitchen and sheltering programs.

Winter visions

When snow fell on Kershaw County on Tuesday, local shutterbugs took out their cameras (or smartphones) and took some pictures. In the first photo is Reid Graham and his snowman in a picture posted to the C-I's Facebook page by his grandmother, Linda Fender Graham. The second picture is a photo of some daffodils in the snow taken by former C-I editor Martha Bruce near the corner of Mill and Haile streets. It's "kind of a 'mixed message' of winter and spring," she said.

County native’s ‘Lighthouse’ combats sex trafficking

Andrea Wind, daughter of Lugoff Ford, Lugoff Toyota and Carolina Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram owner Mark Mason, recently founded Lighthouse for Life, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to combating sex trafficking through "education, restoration and empowerment," according to the organization's website.
