A weekend of parades

Three parades held in two days drew thousands to line Kershaw County's streets. Saturday saw the Kershaw County Christmas Parade, while Sunday brought both the Boykin Christmas Parade and -- due to a 24-hour rain delay -- the Lights of Lugoff Parade.

City, county employees complete economic development program

Caitlin Corbett, assistant to the city manager of Camden, and Lauren Branham-Reeder, marketing and administrative assistant for Kershaw County's economic development office, were among more than 50 local leaders and development professionals from across South Carolina who recently completed the 2013 S.C. Economic Development Institute. Institute graduates received certificates of completion during the final day of the institute's program held at Rock Hill City Hall.

Tax Tips -- Don't fall for charity scams

The IRS warns consumers not to fall for bogus charity scams. They often occur in the wake of major disasters like the recent tornadoes in the Midwest or the typhoon in the Philippines. Thieves play on the goodwill of people who want to help disaster victims. They pose as a real charity in order to steal money or get private information to commit identity theft.

Cliatt returns home to perform in Camden

The 44th annual Colonial Cup

For Dr. Larry Parrott of Camden, this year's Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup not only marked the 44th anniversary of the steeplechase event, but his 40th year of attendance. This year, he and his wife, Joy, along with their granddaughters, Bethany and Mabry Parrott, came out to tailgate, visit with friends and enjoy the races.

Machachi, Equador, leaves impact on First Baptist Church in Camden

Since 2011, First Baptist Church (FBC) of Camden has sent 56 Kershaw County residents on 19 mission teams to Machachi, Ecuador. Some of them have been to the South American city multiple times. Those participating in FBC's missions there say the trips are having a lasting impact, not only in Machachi -- located some 25 miles south of Ecuador's capital, Quito -- but back in Camden as well.

Our Barn, a Christian-based Western riding and boarding facility, is located halfway between Ridgeway and Lugoff. Lori Freeman of Ridgeway owns Our Barn and also gives riding instruction there. She and a team of riders from the area, who are also part of the Our Barn group, participated recently in an annual fundraising event called Ride to the Ride.

Registration for blood drive at INVISTA Camden plant

As summertime draws to an end, with kids back at school and football season about to take off, please take the opportunity to sign up for the blood donation drive at the INVISTA Camden plant. The blood drive will be held on September 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the TC-1 building, where there's plenty of room and the service is fast and friendly. Donations are being completed within 30-40 minutes of arrival.
