The light show over Lake Wateree Monday night in celebration of the Fourth of July treated spectators to colorful bursts both natural and manmade. Crackles of lightning intensified the annual fireworks display, hosted by the Lake Wateree Association (LWA) and Wateree Homeowners Association Fairfield County. Donations to this community event are still accepted by mail at LWA, P.O. Box 2132, Camden, SC 29021 or on the LWA's website.
Independence Day (July 4th) is a great holiday! We don't give gifts. And most people don't send "Happy Fourth of July" cards. Families have traditions how to celebrate. For me, it's parades, fireworks and food! Most of the foods we think of for this holiday are quite simple. Hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue are at the top of my list. It's a case of "put it on the grill and sit in the shade." (One may guess that this is my day out of the kitchen.)
Miss America 2008 Kristen Haglund (third from left) visited Camden Wednesday after being invited by local caterer Jack Brantley (second from left). Brantley owns and operates Aberdeen Catery in Camden and has been involved with the Miss America pageant for more than 30 years through his service with the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Camden Jaycees. The library is one of my favorite places. The workers there are friendly and helpful. I grew up in a very small town. The library was one, small room. That room had books and a desk -- that's all. The librarian checked out books, with a rubber stamp. The library wasn't much to look at. But there I explored new worlds in books.
The third annual KershawHealth Springdale 5K at Sunsetwill be held Aug. 20 at Springdale Race Course. The 5K Walk/Run is coordinated by the United Way of Kershaw County and benefits the United Way's Health Care Council and its mission of improving the health of everyone in our community.
