L-EHS student is Eagle Scout

Joseph Sawyer Stryon, a senior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Sawyer's required service project including landscaping improvements and repairs to the historic grounds and graveyard at Smyrna United Methodist Church in Elgin. He is the son of Jody Stryon of Elgin, and Sheila Stegall of Columbia. He is a member of Troop 316 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Lugoff.

DJJ honors late employee

Family members of S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Kershaw County probation/parole officer Jennifer Donald and DJJ employees gathered Wednesday to honor her memory. Donald worked for DJJ in Kershaw County for more than 26 years before passing away earlier this year from a medical condition. Tuesday, students from the community cleared an area in front of Camden's DJJ building in preparation for Wednesday's service and as part of Restoring Carolina, during which the agency performs community service projects to commemorate 9/11. Ashwood reunion

The Ashwood Central High Class of 1978, which included members now living in Kershaw County, recently held its 37th reunion with a weekend of festivities at the Lee County Opera House and Ashwood gym in Bishopville. Patricia Simon organized the event which opened with Ronnie Wilson welcoming everyone to the drop-in. The speaker for the occasion was Debra A. Joe. Minister Linda C.M. Camden Community Theater launches new season

Sistercare helps battered women and their children

South Carolina has one of the highest incidents of domestic violence-related homicide in 2014. According to the latest South Carolina Report on Domestic Violence, Homicide Victims, 83 percent of reported incidents in the state were committed against women. Sistercare -- a private, nonprofit United Way partner agency serving Kershaw, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry and Richland counties -- helps battered women and their children. Executive Director Nancy Barton said Sistercare's purpose is to provide various services for women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence.

Shag lessons, instructed by Patty and Larry Blackmon, start Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Kershaw County Recreation Department. Junior classes, 6 p.m. for ages 16-20, four classes, $25 per person. Beginner classes, ages 21 and up, 7 p.m., six classes $50 per person. Intermediate classes, ages 21 and up, 8 p.m., four classes, $50 per person.

4-H national trip winner

Sidney Goff (left) recently won a trip to the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. State 4-H Congress delegates chose Goff, whown here at the conference with State 4-H Program Team Leader Dr. Pamela Ardern, based on 4-H portfolio, resume and an interview. Naturalist Tom Mancke visits Golden Club

Many would call Tom Mancke a world traveler, but the good news is he has always come back to his native South Carolina with stories and artifacts to share from his travels. Mancke was the guest speaker at the Aug. 6 meeting of The Golden Club in Camden. He has taught Natural History at Hammond School in Columbia for more than 25 years. Mancke said he feels a strong philosophical connection to all things, living or not, and he shares his experiences with his students.

Parrott Scholarship winner

Dr. Larry Parrott (far left) and Joy Parrott recently presented the 34th David Parrott Memorial Scholarship to Julia Daniels (center) during a brief ceremony held at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. The award is for development of Christian character. Julia, who is the daughter of Kathryn and Billy Watkins of Camden, has maintained an outstanding academic record at the S.C. Governor's School and will attend Clemson University in the fall. Participating are (from left) Dr. Parrott, Joy Parrott, Rev. Teen volunteers

Each year, KershawHealth hosts teen volunteers who assist staff with various duties throughout the hospital. This summer, teens took on a project to beautify the courtyard at the medical center. The Hospital Auxiliary Board donated funds to purchase some colorful annuals, fresh mulch and potting soil for the planting beds. With the help of Camden Urban Forester Liz Gilland, the teens removed dead plants, pruned others, weeded, refreshed mulch in the beds and planted new flowers to brighten up this well-used space.
