PAL baseball registration to begin next week
County comes out to support NPS designations
Government officials, historic site representatives, preservationists, business owners and history buffs crowded into the Robert Mills Courthouse in downtown Camden for two public meetings Wednesday all in support of an effort to designate two historic sites as units within the U.S. National Park Service (NPS).
L-EWA to install standby generator
The Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) Board of Directors unanimously approved General Manager Mike Hancock's request earlier this month to put out bids for a standby generator at the main water treatment plant. Hancock said it will strengthen the authority's ability to maintain services despite power outages at the station.
Elgin garage fire spreads to other properties
A blaze that originated in a Sun Valley Road, Elgin, garage spread down the street to burn multiple garages, workshops, yards, a car and one home Monday afternoon.

Chamber board meeting rescheduled to next week
The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce rescheduled its monthly board of directors meeting from Thursday to next week after a forecast of possible inclement weather.
KCSO Employee of the Month
Beverly Brevard was selected as January's "Employee of the Month" for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office. Brevard has worked in law enforcement for 22 years, beginning in 1989 as a 911 dispatcher. She began working directly for the sheriff's office in 1995, and now works in the records and sex offender registry.
Economic ambassador
Steve Singleton (center), general manager of Canfor Southern Pine (formerly New South Lumber Co.), has been honored as an Ambassador for Economic Development by the S.C. Department of Commerce and legislative leaders. S.C. Gov. Residents are proud of their Pine Creek neighborhood in Camden, which was recognized by Firewise Communities/USA, part of the National Firewise Communities program, for its fire hazard awareness. Prescribed burns beneficial but increasingly challenging
The use of prescribed fire as a land management tool has deep and ancient roots in South Carolina's heritage. However, conducting prescribed burns is becoming increasingly challenging due to a variety of factors, according to a state wildlife biologist and forester.
