Cashion to return from Afghanistan Oct. 28

Soldiers form the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Alabama Army National Guard, will return to Birmingham Oct. 28 after a one-year deployment to Afghanistan. The unit is expected to return to the Birmingham National Guard armory.

Jak Smyrl collection purchased by USC library

The University of South Carolina (USC) Libraries is now home to a collection of more than 5,000 images, plus correspondence, sketchbooks, and even early elementary-school artwork Camden's Oscar Jackson "Jak" Smyrl, The State newspaper's first staff artist, who passed away in 2007.
