Chamber board meeting rescheduled to next week

The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce rescheduled its monthly board of directors meeting from Thursday to next week after a forecast of possible inclement weather.

KCSO Employee of the Month

Beverly Brevard was selected as January's "Employee of the Month" for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office. Brevard has worked in law enforcement for 22 years, beginning in 1989 as a 911 dispatcher. She began working directly for the sheriff's office in 1995, and now works in the records and sex offender registry.

Economic ambassador

Steve Singleton (center), general manager of Canfor Southern Pine (formerly New South Lumber Co.), has been honored as an Ambassador for Economic Development by the S.C. Department of Commerce and legislative leaders. S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley (left) and House Speaker Bobby Harrell (right) gave their congratulations to Singleton for the recognition, which came as part of the state's 20th annual Industry Appreciation Week and recognizes individuals for their exceptional efforts to bolster community and economic development activities in South Carolina. Firewise

Residents are proud of their Pine Creek neighborhood in Camden, which was recognized by Firewise Communities/USA, part of the National Firewise Communities program, for its fire hazard awareness. Pine Creek met several standards to receive the honor, including enlisting an urban interface specialist with the S.C. Forestry Commission to complete a community assessment; sponsoring a local Firewise Task Force Committee; and submitting an annual report to Firewise Communities that documents continuing compliance with the program. As AT&T announced the availability of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Camden in early December, extending access for advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content to customers in the area, two Kershaw County legislators were recognized for their contributions toward helping such technological progress to be made.

Winter visions

When snow fell on Kershaw County on Tuesday, local shutterbugs took out their cameras (or smartphones) and took some pictures. In the first photo is Reid Graham and his snowman in a picture posted to the C-I's Facebook page by his grandmother, Linda Fender Graham. The second picture is a photo of some daffodils in the snow taken by former C-I editor Martha Bruce near the corner of Mill and Haile streets. It's "kind of a 'mixed message' of winter and spring," she said.

PAL Baseball is a non-competitive baseball league for youth and adults with disabilities and special needs, and typically-able youth with assistance from "Pals" available on the team. PAL Baseball is for individuals who do not want to play competitively. Children with special needs as well as children who do not like the physical competition of other leagues can enjoy the fun of PAL Baseball.

County native’s ‘Lighthouse’ combats sex trafficking

Andrea Wind, daughter of Lugoff Ford, Lugoff Toyota and Carolina Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram owner Mark Mason, recently founded Lighthouse for Life, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to combating sex trafficking through "education, restoration and empowerment," according to the organization's website.

Deadline for landowners to join conservation is Friday

Kershaw County landowners are encouraged to apply to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) to be considered for part of $100 million the program is making available to farmers, ranchers and forest landowners.
