Sheriff McCaskill honored

Retiring Kershaw County Sheriff Steve McCaskill was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by Gov. Mark Sanford for his service to the community and South Carolina. He was nominated for the award – the highest civilian honor for community service -- by S.C. Rep. Lester P. Branham, who represents Florence County. The award was presented by McCaskill's sister, Hope, at the sheriff's office holiday party. McCaskill, a life-long Kershaw County resident, joined the sheriff's office as a deputy in 1979. Waffle House fire

Around 9:40 p.m. Dec. 22, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) was dispatched to a structural fire at the Waffle House restaurant on U.S. 601 in Lugoff. Ladder 10 and Engine 10 arrived on the scene to find a light smoke haze throughout the inside of the restaurant and all occupants evacuated, according to LFD Chief Dennis K. Ray. The incident commander was met by the store manager who was able to provide access to the room involved in the fire.
