The Camden Horse named best sports magazine in S.C.

The Camden Horse earned first place as the best Sports Specialty Publication or Sports Magazine published by any non-daily newspaper in the state of South Carolina. This is the first year the category has been included in the South Carolina Press Association's (SCPA) annual news contest. Chronicle-Independent (C-I) Editor Martin L. Cahn accepted the award Saturday on behalf of Camden Media Co. Publisher Mike Mischner at the SCPA's annual meeting in Greenville.

Equine community mourns farrier’s passing

One face will be missing from the Carolina Cup when it returns to Camden March 30. Willie "Almond" Locklear, official farrier for both the Carolina Cup and Colonial Cup since 1997, died last week at the age of 65.

C-I announces newsroom changes

The Chronicle-Independent announces newsroom changes effective today with the hiring of Camden native Fraser Speaks as its new Localife editor. Speaks will take over the Localife page from Tenell Felder. Felder is taking up the mantle of West Wateree Chronicle editor from Michael Ulmer who left Friday for a position with the Aiken Standard.

March 9, from 9 a.m. to noon the Kershaw County Recreation Department (KCRD) and Camden High School will sponsor a baseball camp at the American Legion Baseball Field. The cost is $30 per father/son pair (Checks payable to KCRD). There will be a $5 charge for every other son from the original pair.

Knights of the Guild-East joust at Equine Center

Sir Jefferson, the Blue Knight of Concord -- a member of the Knights of the Guild-East -- prepares for a jousting demonstration at the S.C. Equine Center outside of Camden Feb. 9 during the S.C. Horseman's Council Expo. Other Knights of the Guild-East include the Red Knight, Sir Troy; Green Knight, Sir David; and the Pink Knight, Lady Kayleigh. Camp Emmanuel kids learn about fruits and vegetables

More than 25 youngsters, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years, learned about fruits, vegetables and healthy eating as part of Camp Emmanuel at Emmanuel United Methodist Church on Tuesday. Piggly Wiggly Produce Manager Jane Hunter explained a wide variety of fresh produce and provided samples for the children with the help of Jessica March, another Piggly Wiggly produce department worker who cut the fruits and vegetables into bite-size pieces.
