Strong winds blow through county

Strong winds, with at least one unofficially reported 51 mph gust on Lake Wateree, blew through Kershaw County early Tuesday morning, knocking down trees in some areas, limbs onto power lines and even causing a couple of accidents.

Man killed in plane crash identified as N.Y's 'Country Pilot'

The pilot killed when his Piper PA-20 crashed in Elgin early Friday afternoon has been positively identified as Wolfgang Buergel, 71, of East Aurora, N.Y., a rural community located about 15 to 20 miles southeast of Buffalo, N.Y.

Plane crashes in Elgin; pilot killed

A small, single engine plane headed to an air festival in Lakeland, Fla., from Amherst, N.Y., crashed into a wooded area along Larry Jeffers Road near Elgin just before 2 p.m. Friday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Amherst is part of the greater Buffalo, N.Y., metropolitan area.

Friends of Education

North Central High School (NCHS) was the recipient of a $5,000 gift from the International Paper Foundation. The money is being used to purchase reading materials for classrooms and the NCHC Media Center in order to enhance literacy across the curriculum initiative. Principal Worth Thomasson (right) said the International Paper Foundation made it possible for the school to benefit its students by encouraging them to read on a daily basis. Thomasson accepted the check on behalf of the school from International Paper representative Tim Boone (left).
