Elgin moving forward with Potter Park stage

Elgin Town Council is moving forward with plans to build a structure on Potter Community Park, located at the corner of Green Hill Road and Main Street in Elgin. The structure would function as a stage and shelter.

County, Elgin team up to keep waters clean

Clean water is something that can easily be taken for granted, however there are government programs in place to help enforce practices to ensure that the water supply stays clean and uncontaminated. The Kershaw County Stormwater Management program, however, aims to significantly reduce water pollutants that enter local streams, lakes and other bodies of water.

Heavy rain causes portion of Wildwood Lane to collapse

Law enforcement blocked off a portion of Wildwood Lane behind Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) after a catch basin and a piece of the roadway collapsed Monday morning. As of Tuesday afternoon, the portion of the road -- between Richardson Boulevard and Magnolia Lane -- was still blocked off. Officials from the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) said heavy rain caused the collapse. SCDOT Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer Brian Motley said the road may reopen Thursday afternoon, depending on the weather.

Hundreds gather in Elgin for Gabbiee Swainson vigil

"Taken too soon" was the phrase repeated numerous times during a vigil Wednesday night to honor Gabbiee Swainson's life. Gabbiee, a student at Ridgeview High School in Richland County, was taken from her northeast Columbia home one year ago.

Bookshelf and book donation

The Livi's Library Foundation, represented by Harris Godfrey and his mother, Amanda, delivered a new bookshelf filled with gently used children's books to the Sandhills Medical Foundation (SMF) clinic in Lugoff. The books will be enjoyed and taken home by the children who are seen in the clinic. Elgin may only allow by-permit charity events

Individuals and organizations who want to hold charity events in the town of Elgin may have to apply for a permit to do so in the near future. Tuesday night, Elgin Town Council passed first reading of an ordinance that would establish such a rule. No fee would be charged to obtain the permit, however.

Silvers sworn in at Elgin Town Council

Councilwoman Candy Silvers was sworn in as a member of Elgin Town Council during council's meeting July 2. Silvers served on Elgin's Planning and Zoning commission before being elected to council. She joins council members Melissa Emmons, Dana Sloan and Edward Smith.

L-EWA to extend Rabon Road line

The Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) Board of Directors voted unanimously to extend a water line on Rabon Road to include six more homes. The vote came after Rabon Road resident Brandy Husdon requested for the L-EWA to do so. During June's meeting, Hudson presented a jar of water from her residence to the L-EWA board. Hudson explained that the current well water supply had high levels of iron deposits that tinted it a dark yellow. The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society begins wreath sales for veteran’s graves

The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society are selling Christmas wreaths through Wreaths Across America for the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The placing of wreaths on veteran's graves are a great tribute to the men and women who have given so much for the freedom enjoyed each day. This year, the Fort Jackson Cemetery needs 3,500 wreaths to cover each veteran's graves. The Wreath Laying Cemetery will be held at the cemetery on December 13, 2014, at 12 Noon.
